Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi was honored by the New York Open . A Heart Afire: Stories and Teaching of the Early Hasidic Masters (with Netanel Miles-Yepez, 2009).

Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi was honored by the New York Open Center in 1997 for his Spiritual Renewal  . Schachter-Shalomi produced a large body of articles, books, audio and video recordings. His free-association homiletical style, typical of Hasidic-trained rabbis, and his frequent use of psychological terminology and computer metaphors are appreciated by many first-time readers.

A Hidden Light is a description of early aBaD and Bratzlav Hasidic teaching and storytelling, focusing on the founders of aBaD (Shneur Zalman of Liadi, his son, Dov Baer of Lubavitch, and chief disciple, Ahron of Staroshelye) and Bratzlav (Nahman of Bratzlav and his chief disciple, Nosson of Nemirov). In this book, the teachings and tales of these two branches of Hasidic spirituality are richly enhanced by the new insights, interpretations and personal reflections of Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, a modern-day Hasidic master and founder of the Jewish Renewal movement, and Netanel Miles-Yepez, a scholar of comparative religion.

He is the author of Kabbalah: A Love Story and numerous books on Jewish spirituality. This book is a brilliant anthology of early hasidic teaching, but it is much, much more.

Glad I read it even though it wasn't what I thought it would be. Gave terrific background on the ChaBad and Bratslaver hasidic movements, but was a bit short on defining the relative philosophies of those movements. It's a good companion to Buber's "Take of the Hasidim.

The final of three works by Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and Netanel Miles-Yepez on the history and inner, heart-teachings of hasidism from which neo-Hasidism and Jewish Renewal evolves from I'm recommending. Together, these three works form a profound foundation of teaching on the profundity of hasidic truths in an accessible and freeing, i.e., inspiring and heart-connected way. Whereas the previous two, "Wrapped in a Holy Flame," and "A Heart Afire," were more of a broad survey, this is a comparative yet detailed study of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi and Rabbi Nachman of Bratzlav.

The other two works I strongly recommend, making somewhat of a trilogy of works on Hasidism by Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and Netanel Miles-Yepez are "Wrapped in a Holy Flame" and "A Heart Afire."
