This collection of essays on world religions will be remain a classic for the coming century, based on solid scholarship, insightful essays, and embracing a wider, receptive understanding of the multitude of faiths that have guided humanity for millennia. Volume I addresses Hinduism, Buddhism, and Daoism -though these latter two ways of life are not theistic, of course. If you’re a student of world religions you will probably appreciate the inclusion of both scholars and skeptics throughout, as this helps to paint the broadest picture.

When I was searching for a book to read about Buddhism, I had two criteria: 1) I didn't want a book that was written to proselyte me into the faith; and 2) I didn't want a book that sounded like a stuffy history professor trying to impress his peers with big words and undecipherable sentences. This book met my two criteria.

Mr. Chen is a Buddhist and believes in his religion; however, he is able to set his emotional attachments aside and give a concise, no nonsense sketch of Buddhism's history, doctrines, etc.. His writing is easy to read and doesn't get bogged down with uninteresting details.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes their information served straight!

This was a gift, and my friend is very glad to own it. If it is destroyed because of circumstances, I will replace it.

This textbook was once highly regarded in the 1970's but still qualifies as an authoritative survey. Its strengths are (1) factual information (and the author admits that the facts are sometimes hard to find) about the life of Buddha and his teachings (2) a description of the two main schools Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism and (3) Buddhism's history in India, Southeast Asia, China, Tibet and China. This book requires updating in its evaluation of Buddhism in the modern world. And some readers may want a more detailed explanation for why Buddhism was eventually extinguished from India. The straightforward writing style, however, suits the person who wants information more than explanation.
