Spock, who died March 15, 1998, at age ninety-four, was married to Mary Morgan. I would not recommend this book if you are looking for a good read on Dr. Spock's teachings

Spock, who died March 15, 1998, at age ninety-four, was married to Mary Morgan. Paperback: 992 pages. Spock's teachings. Dr. Spock's name is only listed as a way of cashing in for the author, as, at most, only 1% of the book covers Dr. Spock's teachings, and those are only small excerpts. I was very disappointed about this and definitely felt cheated as I would not have noticed or purchased this book otherwise.

Dr Benjamin Spock's Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care is one of the best-selling books .

Dr Benjamin Spock's Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care is one of the best-selling books of all time, with overall sales of some 50 million. Baby and Child Care challenged the child-rearing orthodoxy of the early 20th Century - that babies should be fed according to a tight schedule, and that showing them too much affection made them weak and unprepared for the world. Instead, Dr Spock encouraged a more gentle approach to bringing up children, and told parents to trust their own instincts and common sense.

Benjamin Spock is America’s most trusted name. Dr Spock's classic baby and child care book is definitely a case of the latter category

Benjamin Spock is America’s most trusted name. When my baby daughter arrived, advice, much of it unasked for, poured in from friends and relatives. Dr Spock's classic baby and child care book is definitely a case of the latter category. Reading it now, after having read many more detailed books, I can't help but wish that this was the only book on the subject I ever read.

Benjamin Spock is the most trusted name in child care today, as well as being the most famous pediatrician worldwide. His reassuring and commonsense advice has shaped parenting practices for over half a century.

I would not recommend this book if you are looking for a good read on Dr. Spock's teachings. I was very disappointed about this and definitely felt cheated as I would not have noticed or purchased this book otherwise. This is not a book that you sit down and read from cover to cover on child rearing, but is rather a book that you turn to when you have a specific issue, as it is far too detailed and covers a lot of ground that is simply common sense.

As a parent and school-based Speech-Language Pathologist, I highly recommend this book. It has sections about every topic you can think of relating to kids. It is a long and factual book, so it is not a quick read. Some might find it better to use like a reference book, as needed. Others may want to skim parts that they already feel well-versed in. Dr. Spock was ahead of his time, and this book is completely up-to-date and fact based.

I wish this would be re-issued in a format that's a little easier to read and thumb through. The type is too small and the format is too small. But the content is still amazing.... This is the best, most useful baby/early childhood book out there... and has been for years. Be sure to get the updated version with T. Berry Brazelton, who was a brilliant pediatrician/child behaviorist in his own right.

Can't go wrong with this. I have children who span three decades in age, and have raised them all using this book. When I was a child Spock was much loved and this book was everywhere. Now there are so many more books - I've read many of them, and must say the 'new-fangled' ideas in them are often totally untested, pretentious and needless. I would stick with Spock for attitude, technique, and knowledge. You will read many criticisms of Spock, or so I'm finding, but most of those criticisms are ignorant, unbalanced and witless in the extreme - seem to exist mostly to make sure people buy new books.

Gift for a friend, my favorite go-to-baby guide for new parents. Filled with no nonsense answers to everyday questions. The ultimate manual to avoid panic when you encounter those OMG situations as a first time parent.

My favorite baby gift for new moms. Dr. Spock answers those pesky questions like "is that weird squeak coming out of my sleeping child normal" or "should baby poop be that color?" especially when you don't want to call your mum for the third time at 2 a.m. I tend to buy 2 or 3 copies at a time to share as new moms announcement their pregnancies.

The very best common sense greatest source of info. I started with Dr. Spock 56 yrs. ago, tells what age to expect what in child development, childhood diseases thru preteens. I get these as baby shower and toddler birthday gifts. The moms always thank me.
This book has the most common sense approach to parenting I have seen to date. Very much an advocate of trusting your own instincts, he allows parents to be comfortable with their decisions.

A great reference guide, quick answers to a lot of those questions that new parents have... even the ones that they don't know they have, and the ones they don't want to admit that they have.

I highly recommend this book!

**********************UPDATE************************

So, my son is 4 now, and my dog-eared copy of Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care still has a place of prominence on my bookshelf.
This book helped me get through a couple of awful colds. It helped me figure out childproofing. Struggles with toilet training (best advice ever- stop struggling!), dinner-time (same advice! :-) ) So many little (and big) questions were answered with this book.

I could research things in the book, prior to taking my son for his well-baby checkups.

I'm a single mom with a really supportive family - that lives a thousand miles away. Dr. Spock helped fill the gaps. It's not a bible, it's not infallible- I don't completely agree, but I don't completely agree with my mother either!

I just can't recommend this book enough.

**********************2nd Update!******************************

My son is now a 7 year old second grader. And we're a part of a blended family.

I've just pulled my extremely well used copy of Dr. Spock's Baby and Child care off my shelf again and find myself looking to it for help.
I think I'll need to buy another copy, as mine is dog eared to the point of falling apart- through no fault of the book, just from constant use.

If I could convince everyone to buy just one book to help them raise a child- this would be it.

What to do about lying, once a child tries it? What to do about bullies, when they're encountered in school? Should I call the doctor about that rash? My child suddenly developed some new, and strange fears - what should I do?
These are all questions that I turned to Dr. Spock for. And all things that Dr. Spock helped me with.

I LOVE this book!
