This book fits into my collection of "how to write" books very nicely. Not all his opinions are gospel, of course, but his ideas are presented as tried and proven. There are no "musts" in Braines world, and no diagrams delineating how the plot line SHOULD run. Braine's presentation is far more organic than the diagramatic and prescriptive methods prevalent in most "self-help" books on writing today.

John Braine was born in the Westgate area of central Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire. The family later moved to the suburb of Thackley on the northern edge of the city. He wrote several more novels, including Life at the Top, a sequel to Room at the Top. His 1968 novel The Crying Game is set in London and captures some of the atmosphere of the 'Swinging Sixties'. His 1974 book Writing a Novel was a guide for aspiring novelists. Braine was mildly left-wing in his youth, but like his contemporaries (and fellow "angry young men") Amis and John Wain, he later moved to the political right, and supported America's involvement in the Vietnam War.

The author's first novel, Room at the Top, was published in 1957 and he continued writing successfully until his death in 1986. Born in Yorkshire in 1922, John Braine's first published novel was ROOM AT THE TOP. It brought him great fame and wealth and was subsequently made into a classic film starring Laurence Harvey and Simone Signoret. He wrote many other novels before his death in 1986. Country of Publication.

A classic practical guide and manual which tells the aspiring writer everything about writing a publishable first novel.

This book is in its third publication and you will definitely know from the references to published books that it is dated. However, for a beginning writer, or even somewhat experienced writer, this book is a very useful guide. Mr. Braine tells it like it is; what worked for him and what to avoid. He guarantees no success. His recommendation is after reading this book is to write, write, write.

The best damn book on writing ever written!

A fantastic writing book. He didn't give exercises, or many craft tips, other than counting your words. It's more of a deeply felt, true, philosophical meditation on writing fiction. Some of the writing books that I most admire clearly were inspired by & drew lots of their ideas directly from John Braine's book.

I read this book after my first novel was published. It pretty much confirmed the writing process, at least for me. I believe the book is out of print now, but it would be a good idea for someone to republish it. The advice was very direct and easy to follow.

I have to agree with everything the only other reviewer has said. He has not written anything about this book that I can disagree with. I am an aspiring writer, but I have the misfortune of being overly critical of the suppositions and speculations presented to me as far as HOW to write goes. Over the years I have read many books concerning how to write the great book. Braine's book has been in my library for years. The whole conversation in the first chapter with Sinclair Lewis asking, "Hands up, all those who want to be writers!" and then, "Then why the hell aren't you at home writing?", has been, for me, the most memorable line out of this kind of book. Why the hell not, indeed?
This book fits into my collection of "how to write" books very nicely. It is not prescriptive, but highly suggestive.
For someone who wants to write original thoughts for publication, Braine's book is helpful in keeping the writer somewhat honest.
