Spirit of place (or soul) refers to the unique, distinctive and cherished aspects of a place; often those celebrated by artists and writers, but also those cherished in folk tales, festivals and celebrations.
Spirit of Place book. I believe this is from a series of books which includes Rome, Tuscany, Provence, Paris and Venice. I would like A short, artistic and very pleasant read about London's landmarks, with paintings, writings and poetry mostly dating from around 1700-1930s. At only 54 pages, this takes hardly an hour to read, but is quite wonderfully well-written and flawless proofreading. The compilers have chosen well. I particularly enjoyed the part about Trafalgar Square and how that area was before it was built.
To see what Tuscany looked like in the Middle Ages, choose the almost pristine medieval town of San Gimignano. It was a stop on the Via Francigena, the main route to Rome for pilgrims and tradespeople, and when that route declined in the late Middle Ages, new building stopped and this hilltop town was left to itself. Works of others - Andrea della Robbia, Piero della Francesca, and Nicola Pisano - enhance its churches. The Parish Church, Pieve di Santa Maria, is eastern Tuscany's finest example of Pisan Romanesque architecture. Arezzo is a good place to see the works of several masters in a small town and traveler-friendly setting.
Luca and his staff are the best there is. We had booked him for three days and he set up a tour of the top places with lunches at winery's. The tour the food and the wine was second to none. Date of experience: June 2014.
So happy this is my neighborhood store! This is the first time I've felt compelled to be loyal to one liquor store. I've been back to Tuscany several times since the new management stepped in & I haven't had a bad experience since. The service is good, they have a HUGE selection of beer (not moldy!) and liquor, and the alcohol is priced competitively.

Florence is Tuscany’s beating heart: don’t miss the Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore and its innovative dome designed by Brunelleschi to withstand lightning, earthquakes and the passage of time. Only a few steps away, you’ll find one of Italy’s most beautiful bell tower, Giotto’s Campanile. It belongs to the same complex of buildings, so you’ll get a package of marvelous sights all-in-one. An UNESCO World Heritage Site, this city’s history is entagled with Pope Pio II who was born here when this place was an anonymous village. When he became pope in 1458, he wanted to turn his birthplace into the ideal Renaissance town.
