ROCKWELL KENT (1882-1971) was one of America’s most celebrated graphic artists. At the height of his career, during the 1930’s and 1940’s, Kent’s artwork appeared virtually everywhere. Although his illustrations for The Complete Works of William Shakespeare and Moby Dick are perhaps his most famous artistic achievements, Kent also created the random house that, despite revision through the years, has been the colophon of that company since its inception in 1928.

Edward Hoagland, best known for his essays, is also an extraordinary writer as fiction, as readers of his stories . Sixty years after the publication of his first novel, Cat Man, Edward Hogland is publishing his twenty-fifth book at the age of eighty-three.

Edward Hoagland, best known for his essays, is also an extraordinary writer as fiction, as readers of his stories "The Final Fate of Alligators" and "Kwan's Coney Island" can attest. This capstone novel, set in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, introduces Press, a stockbroker going blind.

3. Rockwell Kent, Edward Hoagland (Foreword). Published by Wesleyan (1996).

When artist, illustrator, writer, and adventurer Rockwell Kent first published N by E in a limited edition in 1930, his account of a voyage on a 33-foot cutter from New York Harbor to the rugged shores of Greenland quickly became a collectors' item. Little wonder, for readers are immediately drawn to Kent's vivid descriptions of the experience; we share "the feeling of wind and wet and cold, of lifting seas and steep descents, of rolling over as the wind gusts hit," and the sound "of wind in the shrouds, of hard spray flung on a drum-tight canvas, of rushing water at the scuppers, of the gale shearing a tormented sea." When the ship sinks in a storm-swept fjord within 50 miles of its destination, the story turns to the stranding and subsequent rescue of the three-man crew, salvage of the vessel, and life among native Greenlanders. Magnificently illustrated by Kent's wood-block prints and narrated in his poetic and highly entertaining style, this tale of the perils of killer nor'easters, treacherous icebergs, and impenetrable fog -- and the joys of sperm whales breaching or dawn unmasking a longed-for landfall -- is a rare treat for old salts and landlubbers alike.

Superbly written, excellent story telling - and all true. A fantastic time of American life from a true individual. Fine engravings included
generation of new
Sought this out after reading Sterling Hayden's, Wanderer, and enjoyed the narrative as well as Kent's illustrations. This is an exciting colorful account of an ostensible failure of a sea adventure, a shipwreck that leads to an encounter with the inhabitants of Greenland that is as interesting as the voyagers' numerous close calls. The intimate scale of the voyage, a small sailing vessel, a crew of three men of varied background and motivation, lent itself well to Kent's deeper reflections on human character. This edition's information about the author's life and checkered career is a plus.
Butius
A hard book to read and understand. The old writing is interesting for maybe some people and the story is very good ,but just not for me.

I recently became a fan of Rockwell Kent after a friend showed me some of his artwork. Upon reading a little (very little) about him I found this book, and I discovered that he illustrated it himself. I identify with the author's yearning for adventure and exploration, and this book is a great, real story of just that...adventure and exploration. Fun read for me!
Anarasida
Lovely book, great story and fabulous woodcut illustrations!

ALL of Rockwell Kent's book are worth a look for History and Wilderness Exploration Buffs.
He was a man of innumerable skills, in addition to being America's most famous Illustrator and Graphic Designer a century ago!
So appreciated that his obituary was printed on the front page of the New York Times...
Still In Mind
Buy this in hard cover if only to protect the Rockwell Kent illustrations in print for someone into the future. Buy the hard cover/Rockwell Kent Moby Dick for the same reasons, but expect that one to blow your mind.
Bought as a gift. Person, as expected, thinks it a great story well told.
