I was expecting more useful information. This book may work for someone who has never had an original thought or someone who has never written anything. It was a waste of money.

"I'm writing it [this book] out of love for the mystery, the hard labour and the beauty of good writing and the conversation it enables each of us to carry on -- with each other and with the world we spend our lives trying to plumb."

The thing that strikes me the most about this book is that it's well written. It reads like an homage to the written word. You can know everything about writing, read this book, not learn a thing, and still enjoy it.

Let's be honest. Even those of us with well over a million words on our pens have trouble writing well. We are all good at writing badly. Sometimes, too often for me, we struggle to find our voices. We fail at finding thrift with our words, and we end up writing complete crap. It's not that we don't know how to do it; we just don't, or we get distracted by other pressures of life. This book will help anyone, any skill level, find the changes they need to make to improve their writing and rekindle that love of writing. Some might need to read it front to back. Others might need to read only a few sections. But there's something for everybody in here. Many of the sections were old hat for me, but I still enjoyed them. I relearned those lessons I learned the hard way, and I found joy and inspiration in his reminders. The "Try This" exercises alone are worth opening this book up for.

In my opinion, Mr. Tredinnick has succeeded in writing a profoundly useful and readable self-help writing book, and in my humble opinion, it should be in every writer's personal library.

This book by Mark Tredinick is a blend of (1) how to develop your own writing style and (2) why various components of style add or detract from the effectiveness of your writing. It is probably a useful book for the beginning writer who has not yet developed an understanding of his/her own style. I would not recommend it for people who have already been writing seriously.

This is not a book on the technical aspects of writing such as proper grammar, punctuation, etc. While it includes some material on these subjects, there are better books addressing these topics like "The McGraw-Hill Handbook of English Grammar and Usage", "Write Right! Rewrite Right!", and simple books like "Painless Grammar."

Writing Well by Mark Tredinnick is one of the absolutely best books on writing that I have ever read. Tredinnick's writing style exemplifies what he teaches. This book contains more information about more aspects of writing than I have ever seen in one place, without ever uttering a dull sentence. I am a published author and reasonably accomplished writer. This book has elucidated and enhanced my understanding of the craft. Kudos!

Not sure why this has so few ratings on Amazon. It's an extremely well-written book....as should any book on writing well should be!
Mightsinger
This book should be compulsory reading for anyone with aspirations to write. I also think it should be on the shelf of experienced writers, for those moments when you sit in front of a blank screen and wonder what on earth you are doing, trying to write that next great thing.

It's greatest attribute is that it's a writing book - written well. It's a thoroughly readable book about writing well. Not every book on the subject does this.

This book provides a great argument for writing well, whether you're writing a novel, a poem, or an e-mail. The author suggests that everything you write should contribute to the health of the language. This book has changed the way I read and write in a positive way.
