This study of Jewish American drama as it reflects Jewish American experience is the first book on the subject and a brilliant one: comprehensive, insightful, eloquent, and witty. Beyond the Golden Door is a great addition to a course on Jewish culture, or indeed any aspect of immigration and its consequences, because, in the end, Novick makes us wonder about the future of not just Jewish Americans, but all immigrants and the survival of all immigrant traditions in America, the Golden Land.

Julius Novick taught Modern Drama all his career and his book is as entertaining and informative as a good Modern Drama lecture ought to be in a top notch modern university classroom. The plays he writes about run the gamut of American Jewish experience and you will applaud and shout "Bravo" The American Jewish show goes on and Novick
will have you thinking and rellecting on the universal nature of Jewish drama. A must read.

A first-rate book on a topic that, strangely, hasn't been much explored. Jewish-American novelists, yes. Jewish-American playwrights, no. Maybe because Odets, Arthur Miller, etc., resist and resent that categorization. Novick sheds light on a complicated subject without further complicating it or dumbing it down. Highly recommended.
