Karen Wiesner is the author of the best-selling First Draft in 30 Days, as well as more than forty novels and has been named a leading romance writer by The Writer Magazine. She is author of the Gypsy Road Series, the Angelfire trilogy, Dare to Love series, and the Wounded Warriors series. That's exactly what I got. I also referenced her first book: First Draft in 30 Days which provided a number of the "forms" or "worksheets". I found I didn't need or want to follow every step exactly the way the author prescribes, but I stuck pretty close to her guide for most of the process.

My first impressions of First Draft in 30 Days were more positive than my first impressions of From First Draft to Finished . Wiesner's book provides you with the tools, exercises, and story checklists to write a cohesive story.

I have no idea how Karen Wiesner always manages to handle a complex plot and such a huge cast of characters. It's totally jaw-dropping! I love the way the characters develop er riveting article, "Tension & Twists," which is excerpted from her craft book, Cohesive Story Building (formerly titled From First Draft to Finished Novel, Writers Digest Books). Karen not only discusses tension and suspense but equally important, release and downtime.

Cohesive Story Building shows how each element hinges on the other two and how to mix . Books related to Cohesive Story Building.

Cohesive Story Building shows how each element hinges on the other two and how to mix them until they fuse irrevocably. Additionally, Cohesive Story Building carefully explores each of stage of story development from brainstorming and outlining to drafting and revision. Many who have read Karen Wiesner's reference First Draft in 30 Days, which focuses on in-depth outlining and goal-setting, will find Cohesive Story Building a perfect companion to that book.

Her book, From First Draft to Finished Novel: A Writer’s Guide to Cohesive Story Building, was published by Writer’s Digest Books. It’s a fantastic read that starts with an outline, and each subsequent step builds upon the previous one until you have your first full draft of a book. Wiesner says, Without robbing you of the joy of your craft, this guide will teach you how to become a systematic, self-disciplined, productive author-no matter your genre or level of experience. It’s definitely worth the read. 3) The 5-Step Method. This method from the fantasy writers’ blog Mythic Scribes, is less structured than the previous two methods.

Build a fully developed, multi-layered story from the ground up!

Writing a story is not that much different than building a house. Both require some brainstorming (to provide a clear vision), a blueprint or outline (to lay a solid foundation upon which that vision can be built), building or drafting (to make the vision a reality), and decorating or revising (to polish the masterpiece and make it presentable to the public).

In From First Draft to Finished Novel, novelist Karen S. Wiesner carefully explores each of these stages, showing you how to: Create a quick outline to help organize and expand your original idea Develop a detailed Story Plan Checklist to solidify your story's details Combine and effectively use tools like your outline and story checklist to weave together a cohesive draft Put together a strong query letter and submission package This book also features exclusive worksheets, checklists, and detailed examples designed to help you: Improve your outlining techniques through the use of character, plot, and setting sketches Write a strong Story Plan Checklist that ensures your characters evolve and your plot progresses Develop your editing skills using revision and "punch" checklists Whether you're working on a new story or a project in development, From First Draft to Finished Novel is your blueprint to a story readers won't be able to resist.

I've made a living writing short works for 20 years, but never knew quite how to tackle a novel. I didn't need another writers' cheerleading book to tell me how to overcome writer's block or explain such concepts as show don't tell. I wanted a nuts and bolts guide to building a novel. That's exactly what I got. I also referenced her first book: First Draft in 30 Days which provided a number of the "forms" or "worksheets". I found I didn't need or want to follow every step exactly the way the author prescribes, but I stuck pretty close to her guide for most of the process. It was invaluable.

I bought the book about two months after I committed myself to writing a YA novel. I sat down with this book, some notes and sketchy plot ideas for my story and started working--part time. Four months later, I handed the book off to a professional editor. Great response, no major developmental changes, a few stylistic suggestions. A month later I published my first novel on kindle. Readers and reviewers say it's good, but that's not the point. This book isn't going to tell you how to write well. But if you already know how to put ideas into words and words into stories, this book offers a great step-by-step guide for efficiently and logically creating a novel.

I'm starting my second book now. Today, sitting at my computer with a file folder full of notes, I found myself reaching for this book again. Thank you Karen Wiesner.

I have to add that I referenced one other book while writing my first novel. It was not as important to me as Karen Wiesner's book, but I found it helpful as a sort of checklist that I could reference to make sure my book had the story elements needed for a good novel. (breakout?? That remains to be seen, but I do think it made my book better.)The Breakout Novelist: Craft and Strategies for Career Fiction Writers

This is the most disorganized book I have ever read. The pages numbers are gray print on gray background. and almost impossible to read. The author refers to an exercise or short read, but does not give the page number. I go to the index and find the exercise, but its NOT on the page number listed.
She has some good advice, but I spend too much time trying to figure out how to use the book.

I read this book and 'First Draft in 30 Days'. They're not set up to require you to buy both, but they compliment each other very well. I got just as much helpful info from each book, not repeats like I've found from other 'series'.

I can't say enough good things about this book. I can now figure out where my issues are in each MS, prop up the middles and get them cohesive. While I may have been able to eventually get published with out the help of these books, I don't think it would have happened any time soon.

At first glance, her method looks a bit complicated. But after reading the book all the way through, and starting at the beginning, It is rather very simple.

There are some things I use (99%) while I discard the items that don't work for me.

As for typing in the worksheets into Word myself, It took me about a half an hour. I typed them up once(customized to my tastes), as master copies, and now I'll be able to use them for any book I decide to write.

I was stuck in a major rut. I did some of the creative writing exercises, knew my plot, had a vague idea of characters, etc., but I still could not get past the blah, blah, blah of most writing books. This book does not go into all of that. It gives you very practical advice to PLAN FOR YOUR WRITING SUCCESS.

It does not take a rocket scientist. I never thought that checklists and organization tips could be so inspiring, but the more information I compile in my writing notebook, the more tangible result I can see. It's absolutely infectious enthusiasm which has already carried me through more than 5,000 words. Plus, by the time I get done reading a portion of this book, I am ready to depart on some totally relaxed writing exercises.

If you are looking for a book to tell you about characters or plot, then look elsewhere. This book guides you to an acquaintance with intimate details of your character which you didn't know existed. It may not make your writing artistic, but it will make your ideas clearer. It is an excellent power-up for beginning book writers (like me) who are just a little overwhelmed by a feeling of inadequacy or by what appears to be a lack of progress.

I bought this as a companion book to "First Draft in 30 Days." Where "30 Days" gives the key outline issues, and an idea of the scope of what needs to be addressed in a novel, this book fills that outline in. I felt that together, they were a great combination, and gave me the perspective I was looking for.
I bought this and also the First Draft in 30 Days by same author. Mostly the information rather generic. I found her style to be boring. You can find better books I think. I doubt most writers could implement this plan in 30 Days.
