I am very thankful to my parents for their love and support, which helped me enormously, but, in many ways, in spite of the love, I was wounded by some of their mistakes. Healing those wounds has made me a better parent. The skills of positive parenting contained in Children Are from Heaven took me more than thirty years to develop. For sixteen years as a counselor of adults with individual and relationship problems, I had a chance to study what didn’t work in my clients’ childhoods. Then, as a parent, during the next fourteen years I began to develop and use new and different parenting skills.

Wow!!! I have just come to realize that the author of this book, is also the author of my very favorite French CD for children (1,2,3 My First French Rhymes).

I read this book when my first child was born. I wanted to teach her French from early on. Not only does the author give plenty of ideas of how to teach a child a second language (much in the same way one teaches instinctively to speak the native language, actually) but more importantly, the author makes every parent realize how much he/she can actually do, even if not fluent in the language one is willing to teach.

I keep the book by my bedside, and have, over the years, re-read now and then bits and pieces, just to keep me encouraged.

I must say that at 6, my daughter can communicate with French children in a way I had not imagined! And as a bonus for the hard work, I am finally fluent myself in French too!

As the parent of two bi-lingual children (Japanese and English), I can say that quite a few of the conclusions in this book are just plain wrong. Discounting the impact of pre-school and school on language acquisition is misguided. Just ask any ex-pat parents who sent their children to a local school.

Parents are great for helping their children acquire a second language, but they are by no means the best option out there. For several reasons:

-The learning curve. Language teachers are going to be far better at teaching your children a second language. By the time your children learn from they easily avoid the mistakes that a first time language teaching parent would.

-The time commitment. Most parents time is filled to the brim with laundry, driving to sports, planning dinner, and helping out with normal homework. Adding more commitments to an already overflowing schedule is a recipe for zero adherence to the plan.

-Parent's don't push as hard. Most parents don't have the nerve to push their kids far enough because of the chance of failure. A qualified teacher is paid to challenge the children she teaches.

To sum it up, parents aren't effective teachers. If you yelled at or corrected your kids, they aren't going to be receptive to learning for a few days. Parents have a difficult time adhering to a plan. Families are busy by nature, adding more to the plate is a very undesirable option. Parents are often inefficient, making many mistakes that a trained teacher would have made well before teaching children.

Should your children be bilingual? Absolutely! Don't hamper them by listening to the poor advice in this book, take classes or hire a professional language teacher.
