Before I bought this book last year, I had been relying on on-line sites to try to ID my Mexican jewelry. I was very frustrated; I so often ran into dead ends. I was looking for a single, comprehensive source to allow me, as a collector & seller, to be much more specific about the origin & age of my pieces. Although certainly not encyclopedic, the information packed into this "Little Book" is much more than I could find on-line or any other work I have found. One of the most helpful parts is the cross referencing of many numbers, eagles & initials. The bits of info about the various workshops & how the jewelry is marked are just bonuses. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an excellent reference for their Mexican Silver Jewelry.

The book contains stamped pictures with names of the Mexican designers.! I would have liked more history or explanations of each, it would have made the book more of an interesting read. I suppose its purpose is strictly for a reference when you have a piece of jewelry and want a name attached to the stamp...in that regard it performs its function.

I just ordered this book in dire need of more in depth information on makers marks. I was disapointed in that it did not really have alot of the less common makers (I already own 5 hallmark ID books and they all have the same info) and I wanted more background information on the houses he did have like the date of org., history & locations ie; page #68 "FRANKLYN" gives no info other than what is on the stamp, and most listings are the same. I was expecting this to be more like the best refrence book I have ever used "AMERICAN JEWELRY MANUFACTURERS" by Dorothy T. Rainwater, and if only they could make there next edition more like that I would purchase it again. I did like the introduction & Eagle numbers so the book was worth purchasing.

Though it is better to have this book than NOT to own it, if you are interested in knowing what all of the markings mean on your Mexican jewelry, this book has very far to go.

Some designers such as SPRATLING are well covered. However, too many designers are simply not here or they have been short-changed (as one example, there ought to be a lot more on DELFINO but even simple bits of information such as his first name and the years he was active are missing).

If you are looking for marks your can't find for free online, this book will disappoint. Almost all of the marks in this book are also shown on free online databases.

Save your money and buy a better book.
JUST DO IT
This is the best book I own for identifying Mexican hallmarks. I am in the antique business and use it mainly for jewelry. I have even discovered obscure marks that I was unable to locate anywhere else. The best thing about this book is that there are clear pictures of each mark(s) and even a brief history of the maker. The book is extremely easy to use and the makers are listed alphabetically. This book is a MUST HAVE for any person interested in or the collector of Mexican silver.
INvait
I have this book and Hougart's book "Southwestern Silver".
Southwestern Silver is 10x better.
This book doesn't have a good design, it is not easy to look things up.
Doesn't have comprehensive details on many artists.
If you are only going to get one book, get Southwestern Silver.
It is easier to use and has better info.
Excellent reference book.
