Want to learn Russian and not go to classes? This is one of the few course that can do it. The two volumes with audio will give you the basics of Russian. It will help you speak Russian so you can live or visit in a Russian speaking community.

The course method was created by the best language experts for the US War Department during World War II. The method was used later in the FSI State Department courses.

There are a few words that dated. Example: words relating to the Soviet government. However if you ever read anything in Russian history, you will need the words. Most of them are in one unit in book 2.

The course is for the serious student of Russian.

If you are not interested in just learning tourist phrases i.e. where can I buy a can of coke etc... but want a more thorough introduction to the language this book (and book II) are definately for you. It covers most topics a visitor (a visitor who plans spending some time there not just a short holiday) to russia would needs i.e. renting a room, having repairs done, visiting the barber's shop etc... The structure of the book is as follows: each chapter starts with a dialouge (who would have guessed???) however, they are much more detailed and informative than in most language learning books I have come across. Followed by a section on structures and idioms used in the dialogue. There is significant amounts of prounciation practice in this book and with good reason. Anyone who is learning russian will know the difficulties in shifting stress patterns and the changing sounds of certain vowels. This book does a good job of covering both of these and more. The final sections of each chapter have the learner listen to a dialogue for comprehension using only the structures and vocab used up to that point (which you are expected to know by heart at that point); and also to take an active part in ficticious conversations whereby the learner is expected to ask for and give information in russian instantly and WITHOUT HESITATION. If the learner has to pause for thought then they must go back over the material for a few hours until the vocab and structures have been thoroughly mastered. If you have read any of my other reviews you will know I am a fan of the SLS series. However, I also warn feint hearted learners to steer clear. These books are not phrasebooks and are not easy to master. If you are not serious about language profficiency stick to the cheap and cheerful trust me on this.
