A Dictionary of Egyptian Arabic. ISBN-13: 978-0828804349. While most of the Arabic in the book is in transliteration, the book does require that the user know Arabic script, as entries are gathered by root. This is one of the big benefits of the book, as you can see words in the context of their cognates & derivatives. You must, however, be able to back-derive the root from the given word, however, so some knowledge of Egyptian Arabic grammar is essential.

I have just moved to Egypt and am trying to learn Arabic. All the previous dictionaries I have seen have been for standard Arabic which is no use for learning to speak in Egypt. This is a fantastic book, that is clearly and concisely set out and I am finding it an invaluable source of information. Slightly expenisve but well-worth the money for anyone who wants to learn the colloquial language of Egypt.

A great tool if you are learning Egyptian Arabic.
The words are organized in alphabetical order by root (in arabic) and example sentences are given for most words in transliteration along with an accompanying English explanation. Since many learning resources are written using transliteration, this dictionary provides a means for me to convert any transliterated books I have to real written arabic that is easily readable.

If you are learning (MSA) as well, I would also suggest buy hans Wehr Dictionary of modern written arabic regular sized as well.

This is a rarity for language-learners' dictionaries. I can think of improvements for Hinds' dictionary (MSA equivalents for colloquial terms would be great, for example, as would Arabic script for derivative forms & example sentences, & it'd be amazing to have a pocket edition), but this book is so damned good that it should really serve as a rôle model for learners' dictionaries.

(MSA grammar will suffice for most purposes; some of the derivative verb forms in Egyptian are different from MSA, but a student will likely still be able to guess correctly.) I've been studying Arabic for three months, & I find this system useable, tho I still sometimes have to make multiple guesses before I find the fight root for the word that I'm looking for.

The greatest benefit that the book has to offer is its thousands of example sentences. For more complex vocabulary, Hinds gives examples of usage, often multiple examples. The examples are engaging, cultural, & often humorous. They make reading the dictionary not only informative, but enjoyable. If, like me, you're using the 10,000-sentences way of learning a language, they're also a great source for learning sentences.

I wish that other languages I've learned had as good a dictionary as Hinds'.

This is an excellent dictionary with numerous entries and a clear print. The best there is for this dialect, hands down.

Note that the discrepancy in price is simply outrageous. A brand-new copy of this dictionary can be had from a prevalently English-speaking bookstore in a posh area of Cairo for the magnificent price of 25 USD. There is no need to pay 10 times more, let alone fork out the fantastic price demanded by some unscrupulous booksellers for which you can almost fly out to Egypt.
Samowar
This is probably the most comprehensive and complete dictionary available for Egyptian Arabic. It is organized by verb root, and has up to several dozen sentence-examples for each entry. This is a hefty book, both in terms of its size and its price, but for someone who is really serious about studying and understanding this important dialect, this is your new bible.
