Unlike many other books that you probably see for learning Thai, this book presents Thai in a useful, classroom way similar to how you learn French or Spanish in high school. Other books are geared more towards tourists and place importance on being able to speak phrases, but this book works in a much more organized manner and places an importance on learning how to read and write so that you don't have to rely on transliteration systems that ultimately end up being useless. If you're seriously interested in learning Thai from an academic standpoint and not just for tourism, this is the best place to start.

Also, be sure that you really learn how to read written Thai before continuing on to the next book in the series, because you'll be really thrown under a bus if you don't. Transliteration still exists when vocabulary is introduced, but disappears afterwards in exercises. I don't know what the third book is like yet, but I assume that if you really don't know how to read Thai by then, you wasted your time.

*I bought this with the Thai for Beginners book and I am rating the pair together

This is a foundational course for Thai. You will learn the Thai alphabet, a small chunk of Thai vocabulary, and be able to speak/understand/read/write at a very basic level. If your goal is to learn a few phrases for travel, this will be way too much background and not enough phrases. If your goal is to learn Thai, then this is a great resource to get you started. But you will need to supplement what you get from this book with other media. My recommendation is to supplement this course with sitcoms, cooking shows, news programs, and movies in Thai from around the internet.

Great resource. I highly recommend it.

This book prepares the absolute beginner to the Thai language with the foundations to start speaking, reading, and to some extent, writing Thai. The topics covered include pronunciation rules and examples, basic greetings, introductory grammar rules for verbs and adjective, and vocabulary for tell time and body parts etc.

I like the format of this book because each chapter is laid out with vocab, sample sentences and conversations based off the vocab, and quizzes to test your retention. It is ideal for classroom use or self study.

I didn't give this book five stars because there really isn't 260 pages of solid material here. For example, the Read Aloud exercises I did not find useful whatsoever and the alphabet tracing exercises take up altogether too much space. I think it's debatable whether or not a student of this level should even worry about how to draw each symbol in the alphabet.

All in all, this is a book that any beginner to intermediate student of the Thai language should have in their collection.

I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend who is also learning Thai. I highly recommend getting the audio CDs/Tapes along with the book to help you to learn pronunciation.
Before I got this book, I was very limited on what I could learn from fellow learners and a native speaker I know. Once I got Thai for Beginners, my vocabulary has expanded immensely, and I feel much more confident when using new words and phrases in conversation.

This is a must have for all beginners learning Thai. I studied this book for about 3 months before my trip, and I could communicate with my girlfriends family. This allowed me to enjoy my trip to Thailand much more than if I could not speak the language. I have owned this book for a few years now and I continually review it to brush up on my Thai.

'Thai for Beginners' is probably your best option, if you want to learn Thai and you can't find a class (because, of course, interacting with a native speaker is always the best way to learn a language). The course is seriously flawed, however. The lessons are little more than lists of vocabulary. Though this works all right with an isolating language like Thai, where you don't need to learn inflexions, the all-important example sentences are short and few, and the exercises are worthless: little more than a revision of the word-lists. The one thing I wholeheartedly praise is the book's emphasis on the writing system, which, I admit, is very difficult but is essential for the beginner to master quickly. Many -- I dare say most -- other teach-yourself courses for Thai introduce the writing system far too late or ignore it completely, condemning the learner to tears and frustration.

While 'Thai for Beginners' certainly is not perfect, it will do to tide you over until you can find a live Thai class. Considering how parched for quality the selection of solo-learner Thai language books is, a class is probably your best bet.

A quality of book is acceptable, but not too great. It is easy to read and understand by foreigners who learn Thai language. Price is acceptable.
This book is a must. I did not order the CD that accompanies the text.... BIG MISTAKE...!! It's easy to order though if you forget.

The book is well organized and easy to navigate. Thai is very difficult for the average English speaker but it's a lot of fun. I've tried some other resources for learning Thai and all of the Paiboon products are far and away the best I've encountered in the market. A very intelligent and common sense approach.... and fun too.

I highly recommend this product if you are serious about learning the language on your own. Don't forget the CD... you will need to listen to the pronunciations. Also, find a Thai friend so they can correct your pronunciation....

Pay them well.... you will have lots of fun...(-;
