Weber is unwavering in her commitment to documenting the intersection of these constructs and she succeeds . Weber brings to life the simultaneous workings of race, class, gender, and sexuality

Weber is unwavering in her commitment to documenting the intersection of these constructs and she succeeds where others have not. The five themes are invaluable teaching tools and the case studies make for useful discussions in class. The text fills a void in the academic literature. Weber brings to life the simultaneous workings of race, class, gender, and sexuality. She goes even further by providing students and professors the tools they need to connect systems of power and inequality. I would not want to teach my structural inequality course without this text.

7 The meanings of race, class, gender, and sexuality vary across historical time periods and geographic regions during the same time period. 8 For example, during the Reconstruction Period, the ideal white male was strong and stoic. The ideal white woman was nurturing and full of emotion. However, the good black man was silly and happy-go-lucky, and the ideal black woman was the asexual Mammy figure who had no family of her own and was emotionally very strong. Are these ideals still relevant today? 9 - Race, Gender, sexuality and class are social constructs.

Analysing case studies and a progression of questions for critical reflection, this book presents a conceptual framework for the analysis of the interlocking nature of race.

Analysing case studies and a progression of questions for critical reflection, this book presents a conceptual framework for the analysis of the interlocking nature of race, class, gender, and sexuality systems of oppression. It addresses the intersections of oppressive systems without rank and points toward strategies to promote social justice.

This is the first text in the rapidly growing study of the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexuality in the United States today. Using clear and accessible language, analysis of case studies, and a progression of questions for critical reflection, the text presents a conceptual framework for the analysis of the interlocking nature of race, class, gender, and sexuality systems of oppression. The framework illustrates that race, class, gender, and sexuality are: socially constructed, historically and globally specific power relations that are simultaneously expressed at the macro/institutional and the micro/individual levels. The analysis presented is complex, addresses the intersections of oppressive systems without rank ordering them, and points toward effective strategies to promote social justice. A leader in the development of race, class, gender, and sexuality scholarship, Weber has carefully devised the pedagogy of the text and the case studies to reflect the knowledge she has gained from almost twenty years of teaching and consulting with faculty and students across the country about the most effective ways to communicate these complex and sometimes emotionally charged ideas in ways that engage diverse audiences.

Comments:

TheSuspect
This book is very monotonious and dry although it did present very important core themes in the Sociology realm for understanding race, class, gender, and sexuality inequalities in America. The core themes presented are an important part of understanding the basis for socioeconomic inequality.
Arcanefist
Highly complex paradigms explained clearly and with highly relevant examples. Intersectionality as method and epistemology gives voice to the interconnections between race, class, gender, and sexuality. This makes sense of identity and representation in many ways.

Here is an excerpt:

"Families are places where the
public authority and power of middle- and
upper-class White male heterosexuals is rein-
forced daily in a variety of ways. When a man
rapes or otherwise sexually assaults the child of
a neighbor, for example, the violation is typically
seen as a crime and is often pursued in the
criminal justice system. When, however, the
same man, particularly if he is middle or upper
class, rapes or otherwise sexually assaults his
own daughter, the rape is more often not chal-
lenged at all, is treated as an issue for social
services, or is dealt with in therapy. The public
power of men (including their greater economic
power) gives them power in the family, making
it especially difficult for women and children to
successfully challenge the abuse of that power
either in the family or in the criminal justice
system."
