A Psychoanalytic Study.

Dr In 1962 he headed a team of colleagues that published "Homosexuality: A Psychoanalytical Study of Male Homosexuals" (Basic Books), a nine-year study of 106 gay men.

Irving Bieber, a psychoanalyst and professor who headed a major study in 1962 on the origins of homosexuality, died yesterday at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. He was 80 years old and lived in Manhattan. He died of pulmonary complications, a friend of the family said. In 1962 he headed a team of colleagues that published "Homosexuality: A Psychoanalytical Study of Male Homosexuals" (Basic Books), a nine-year study of 106 gay men. The study, the largest and most extensive on the origins of homosexuality at that time, held that disruptions in family relationships early in life contributed to a child's homosexual development.

Psychoanalytic Quarterly, 32:111-114. A Psychoanalytic Study: By Irving Bieber, et al. New York: Basic Books, In. 1962. Psychoanalysts have long been sceptical of information elicited by questionnaires which purport to give a scientific explanation of human motivation and behavior.

I purchased a copy of this book for research paper on the origins and developmental causes of SSA (same sex attraction) in males. The remarkable thing about this book is that it was published before homosexuality was taken off the list of mental disorders. The work does not attempt to establish causation or make any judgement as to the morality of SSA. It does however, carefully lay out data that shows significant statistical correlation between certain family of origin factors and the study's SSA participants compared to non-SSA participants. An eye -opening study if you have not already decided your opinion of the origins of SSA and even if you have.

The Preface of this 1962 book states, "This volume presents a systematic study of 106 male homosexuals and 100 male heterosexuals in psychoanalytic treatment with members of the Society of Medical Psychoanalysts. It is the first time that voluminous and detailed data obtained in individual psychoanalyses have been collected for such a large number of homosexuals and subjected to clinical and statistical analysis. This is also the first published study in which a group of full-time psychoanalysts have participated in such an extensive, long-term research program." The study was based on questionnaires; they state, "It must be recognized that the questionnaires were not filled out by naïve observers but by the patients' own psychoanalysts----well-trained psychiatrists with experience in making value judgments based on clinical impressions and interpretations." (Pg. 30)

They note that "by far the greatest number" of mothers of homosexuals were labeled as "Close-binding, intimate." (Pg. 47) They add, "a uniformity of seriously defective father-son relationships has been observed among male homosexuals. The results of our pilot study confirmed our clinical observations." (Pg. 85) They summarize, "The sibling data support our assumption ... that at least one H-parent (and usually both H-parents) has special and characteristic attitudes toward the homosexual son. These attitudes are highly pathologic but are not usually directed toward other siblings in the family." (Pg. 136) They add that the father "frequently remained a hated and feared paternal figure." (Pg. 159) Their ultimate summation: "The `classical' homosexual triangular pattern is one where the mother is (close-binding, intimate) and is dominant and minimizing toward a husband who is a detached father, particularly a hostile-detached one." (Pg. 172)

They observe, "Significantly more homosexuals start sexual activity before adolescence than do heterosexuals and more homosexuals are more frequently sexually active during preadolescence, early adolescence, and adulthood than are heterosexuals." (Pg. 189) They recount, "Excessive fear of physical injury in childhood was noted among three-quarters of the H-patients, and most avoided fights. Less than one-fifth participated in the usual games of boys. Over half were isolates; one-third played predominantly with girls." (Pg. 205)

They conclude, "The 106 homosexual cases reported in this study have provided a unique opportunity to appraise the results of psychoanalytic treatment of homosexuality... 29 patients had become exclusively heterosexual during the course of psychoanalytic treatment. The shift from homosexuality to exclusive heterosexuality for 27 percent of the H-patients is of outstanding importance since these are the most optimistic and promising results thus far reported." (Pg. 276)

This book is more than fifty years old---and shows it. But it is of historical importance, and will be of some interest to anyone studying the background of this issue.
