Anne Sauvy, Sue Harper. Don't worry! My knife's new too!'. A surreal conversation, but it is the act of talking that matters, the human exchange of words, proving that you are stronger than the adverse forces of nature. Anne Sauvy starts her season with the Chamonix mountain rescue on a beautiful August day that sees the complicated and dangerous rescue of a couple who have fallen from the Frontier Ridge on Mont Maudit

The rescue service refused. After a 48-hour stand-off, during which he attempted to charter a private helicopter, he was eventually forced to retrace his steps with the help of a guide. Chamonix’s mayor was understandably infuriated, condemning the ad hoc alpinists who treat the mountain like an amusement park. While such behaviour is in the minority, Buisse explains that, more often that not, it is a lack of experience that lands people in trouble. A lot of people call for rescue not because they’re injured, but because they haven’t managed to get up the mountain by the time night falls.
Chamonix Mountain Rescue. If one of your group injures themselves on the piste
Chamonix Mountain Rescue. If one of your group injures themselves on the piste. Firstly, it’s recommended to place your skis above the site of the accident, planting them in the snow in the shape of a cross, to alert other skiers to the accident. This is especially important in a white-out when other skiers won’t see a person lying on the ground. However many standard ski insurance packages won’t include off-piste rescue as standard, so make sure you’re well prepared with the right cover – bear in mind that a helicopter rescue costs 90€ per minute if you need it! You’ll need to follow the same steps as above while you’re waiting to be rescued.
