The Justinian Code or Corpus Juris Civilis (Corpus of Civil Law) was .

The Justinian Code or Corpus Juris Civilis (Corpus of Civil Law) was a major reform of Byzantine law created by Emperor Justinian I (r. 527-565. The Corpus Juris Civilis not only preserved Roman law but provided the basis of law for emerging European nations. Its influence on western civilization is probably greater than any other book, except, of course, the Bible.

Opus Schoellii morte interceptum absolvit Guilelmus Kroll. The Novels of Justinian (Novellae) form part of the Corpus Iuris Civilis. Most of them were published in Greek. The former belong to the year 535 AD and the latter to the year 565, but most of them were published between 535 and 539. It does not seem, however, that any official compilation of these new constitutions appeared in Justinian’s time. The Greek text consists of 168 Novels : 159 of them were composed during Justinian’s reign and the rest belongs to Justin the Second and to Tiberius.

Samuel Parsons Scott (1846-1929) single-handedly translated into English the Corpus Juris Civilis . The Civil Law, 17 vols. Cincinnati: Central Trust C. 1931.

Samuel Parsons Scott (1846-1929) single-handedly translated into English the Corpus Juris Civilis, the Visigothic Code, and the Siete Partidas. The trans- lation of the Corpus Juris Civilis, published as The Civil Law (1932), was criticized strongly but has been consulted frequently because, until recently, it contained the only published English translation of Justinian's Code.
