The essays included in this book were written specifically for this text by top urban scholars who have done extensive analysis of the development of urban policy in response to minority concerns. Each selection addresses a particular city's racially based electoral coalitions and leadership, as well as examining recent political changes, their impact, and future implications. Each essay also features the editors' successful “Political Incorporation Model” which provides a framework melding research on ethnic coalition with mobilization strategies and allows students to effectively compare one U.S. city to another.

I used this for an honors course in state and local politics. The book is a collection of very in-depth articles discussing the interactions between race, ethnicity, and city-level politics.

The articles discuss several major US cities including Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, and Baltimore. Each article has a historical discussion of that city's mayoral politics from around 1950 to about 2000. This is followed by theory and generalizations attempting to explain phenomena like interracial coalitions, racial factors in mayoral elections, and reasons for a particular regime's success or failure. There last couple articles discuss the future of interracial coalitions and future strategies for minority populations to retain political influence.

The book is very in-depth and I did not find it necessary to read all the history/anecdotes to succeed in my class. I focused more on the sections about the theoretical aspects of racial politics, backed up by the occasional example.

I actually had to get this book for a class in Political Science. But it showed how some of the major cities were designed rezoned and the part race played in the building of America's city.

The book arrived in very good conditions and in the time agreed. I am very satisfied with the service provided.

Like the previous editions, this is an excellent collection on the racial politics of major American cities. I teach a course on Urban Politics and would gladly assign it as one of the readings for my students if the price were at all reasonable. Give people the option of buying it at a normal paperback price without the "Value pack".
