"USA Today""In this awe-inspiring work, Malcolm has created an essential aid to anyone who wishes to understand this tragic region today.

Noel Malcolm, British historian & journalist who's written extensively about the Balkans (including a companion volume of sorts on Bosnia), provides an overview of Kosovo's long-standing cultural divisions in his "short history" (altho, at more than 500 pages, a not so short book). Readers following the unfolding war in Kosovo thru newspaper & tv coverage may well ask why ethnic Albanians & Serbs are struggling so violently to command the small region.

A book that will tell you why this area is the rug of east and west Europe. Wars have started here and will continue to do so as long as nationalizm exists amoung nations. I do not want to live in Kosovo even though it has some of the prettiest land around.
This is a good book telling the history of this Balkan land.

A book of great importance for those who wish to understand the young country of Kosova. Have read the book as soon as I found it on the bookstore shelf and very often refer to it for my own research and writings. It is a well researched and well though of work. Highly recommend it!

It was good as far as it went, and for historic background but I need something that covered the region after 1999.

A great writing that keeps the subject interesting. I read his history of Bosnia as well and was just as entertained while learning.

If you want to know the history of Kosovo but not from the very beginning this is the book! He did a very good work and lots of research. Never trust the Serbian authors as they are very biased on this issue.
I could see why the information in this book would bother some people from the Balkans, because it debunks a ton of myths and lies about Kosovo. But it is not a pro-Albanian book. Awesomely researched.
