Halbfass’ book is a gift to his Indologist colleagues. Due to its comprehensiveness, thoroughness, and clear delineation of the characteristic aspects of the encounter between Europe and India, it is a trusted work of reference. It has prepared the way for a protracted dialogue which should not be historically naive. Indian Theological Studies. Back of the Book Wilhelm Halbfass (1940-2000) was one of the leading Indologists of his generation and perhaps the most insightful scholar of Indian philosophy in the last century. Born in Germany, he spent most of his professional life in North America where he taught Indian philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Madras, India Wilhelm Halbfass, India and Europe. An Essay in Understanding. Halbfass sees India's drive for reflecting upon occidental philosophy rooted in the global ''westernization" which has spread a largely uniform thinking across the world. Thus it becomes questionable whether one can call such an imbalanced communication a dialogue which by definition presupposes two equal partners engaging in an exchange of mutually relevant and interesting ideas.

This book explores the intellectual encounter of India and the West from pre-Alexandrian antiquity until the present. It examines India’s role in European philosophical thought, as well as the reception of European philosophy in Indian thought. Halbfass also considers the tension in India between a traditional and modern understanding of itself.Halbfass covers a wide variety of epochs and “cultures” in this study without oversimplification and without distracting shifts of tone. The volume’s methodological unity is reflected in Halbfass’ reliance on the German hermeneutical tradition and his root characterization of the encounter between Indian and the West as dynamic. It is a contribution rooted in the interpretive tradition typified by the work of Heidegger, Gadamer, and Habermas. This edition is much more than a mere translation. Halbfass has not only translated, but has also revised, updated, and added much new material.

Regarding the review with one star, is it possible that Mr Pratir has confused the subject matter with the author since in dealing with the works of authors like Schlegel etc Halbfass had to show THEIR eurocentrism and, in order to be unbiased, he does this without making great comments either way. Alternatively, perhaps Mr Pratir's sympathies are with Indian Nationalism and he was disconcerted not to find a promotion of Indian Nationalistic views, again, for the reason that Mr Halbfass is not promoting anything other than the search for true understanding. Anyone with a serious interest in understanding the development of the European understanding of India and the growth of Indology should read this book. I'm not sure that the present price tag is warranted though and I'd recommend getting it from a library until there is (hopefully one day!) a reprint. It is worth mentioning that Halbfass assumes a good working knowledge of the various systems of thought in India and without this the reader will not truly comprehend the distortions and mix-ups that various European philosophers and scholars were prone to so this is not a "first book" on India and its traditions.

This book is the definitive study on the cultural interaction between India and Europe. The scholarship is meticulous and the analysis wise and insightful. Give yourself time to read this book. You could spend a year on it, tracing relevant footnotes and citations, if you wanted to. It makes glib orientalist and anti-orientalist "scholarship" appear like People Magazine in comparison.

I cannot believe this book is out of print. It superseded Schwab's "The Oriental Renaissance" as the best book on the India-Europe philosophical encounter. The book is worth buying for its footnotes and bibliography alone.

Although there a few methodological flaws (e.g., including Islam under the heading of "Europe"), this is the book I first recommend to students who are interested in studying India's encounter with Europe. Halbfass passed away long before his time, but thankfully we have books like "India and Europe" to remember him by.
