That matters because Presocratic philosophical fragments are an inescapably iffy business.

That matters because Presocratic philosophical fragments are an inescapably iffy business. Much depends on the reliability and motivations of the author (say, Plato) citing the Presocratic philosopher (say, Heraclitus). For example, most scholars consider Diogenes Laertius's Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers to be of dubious reliability as a source of fragments. Three books that do provide a wealth of fragments (though not as many as Freeman does) as well as ample contextual information are. Jonathan Barnes, Early Greek Philosophy. RD McKirahan, Philosophy Before Socrates.

A plain translation of Diels's German translation of the Fragments. Freeman's book contains only text attributed directly to the thinker in question. We have a whole dialogue spoken mainly in the voice of Timaeus from Plato, for example, but no direct attributions to the man himself. But a very useful reference for the English speaker. At once more comprehensive and more compact than Burnet and without his interpretations; containing just the fragments and one or two-sentence biographical introductions. So Diels' (and Freeman's) entry for him is blank, save for a reminder of this and some other brief remarks.

This book is a great reference for this topic, and makes fascinating reading.

Contents Start Reading Page Index Text This is a translation of nearly every scrap of the writings of the Greek Pre-Socratic Philosophers, from the nearly legendary Orpheus, through Thales, Pythagoras, Heracleitus, Zeno, and Democritus. Included are translations of all known quotations from each writer, names of lost books they wrote, what other authors said about their beliefs, as well as spurious and dubious quotes. Some of the entries, indeed most, are very short, as we only know the names and a bit of biography for some of these figures.
