This, naturally, is the Agony in the title of the book, the Ecstasy being the craved victory in the semi-final against Tipp, after an entire summer of being written off, having sacked their manager halfway through the championship. Waterford hurling has always been a mass of contradictions - city vs county lads, lovely hurlers but a bit flaky, great players but terrible trainers, martyrs for large bottles, indisciplined. It is also refreshing ly honest - Waterford people know what they're like.

In 1998, a determined Waterford hurling team made their way to their first All-Ireland semi-final in almost forty years, their sights firmly set on the final, which would be their first since 1963. But destiny conspired against them and they lost. Over the next twelve years they would, time and time again, play spell-binding hurling, reach the Semi-Finals seven times, Player of the Year Awards and multiple All-Star honours and come agonisingly close to winning one of the biggest prizes in Irish sport.

The Agony and the Ecstasy (1961) is a biographical novel of Michelangelo Buonarroti written by American author Irving Stone. Stone lived in Italy for years visiting many of the locations in Rome and Florence, worked in marble quarries, and apprenticed himself to a marble sculptor. A primary source for the novel is Michelangelo's correspondence, all 495 letters of which Stone had translated from Italian by Charles Speroni and published in 1962 as I, Michelangelo, Sculptor.
