Outside Books introduces a unique series of international sport/travel guides: your favorite adventure sports, our top picks―worldwide―of where to pursue them.

Follow in the footsteps of early twentieth-century explorers on twenty treks spanning six continents that range from Everest Base Camp to a pilgrimage across the Pyrenees. They include: the mysterious Ruwenzori mountains in the heart of Africa; five classic Himalayan tours, including the Annapurna Circuit and seldom-visited Snow Lake; an adventure to the Tekes River Valley in central Asia, country rarely seen by Westerners since the Soviets sealed off the region in the 1920s; sunset from the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, the highest point in Africa; a hut-to-hut trek in Italy’s storied Dolomites; and a llama trek through the surreal redrock desert canyons of southern Utah’s Escalante.

Though I have trekked in Argentina and India, this collection of twenty of the greatest treks in the world has been enjoyed as a coffee table book. It's a good book for that. The photography is superb and the sense of adventure palpable. The book is also suitable for being an actual guide to planning and setting off on these treks. (With inspiring photos when the costs and difficulties begin to deter you.)

I have now done 4 of the hikes in this book. The descriptions are accurate, the difficulty, ratings and resources are all great. I only wish after having this book on my shelf for over 10yrs that there would be a new or updated one. You can't plan your trip with the information in this book, but it certainly helps you get started with where to go, and how to find resources.

Since retirement, a friend and I have been doing 14er's in Colorado and hiking the best trails in the U.S., such as the Grand Canyon and Glacier NP. I got this book as a gift, and it caused us to look seriously at hiking outside the U.S. The book provides a general outline of the 20 best treks in the world. Beautiful photos accompany inspiring text. The treks are rated for difficulty and cost. References to specific outfitters and to other resources are provided, but these references are getting dated. Since getting the book, we have trekked in the Everest region of Nepal, done the Milford Track in New Zealand, and hiked hut-to-hut in the Dolomites. Thanks to the inspiration in this book, we are now off to Patagonia to do the Torres del Paine Circuit.

A great overview of the best treks out there...but not really enough detail on any individual trek without going to another source for detailed information.
