Defensive Shooting For Real Life Encounters, by Ralph Mroz and Winning a High Speed Close Distance Gunfight, by Lou Chiodo

Defensive Shooting For Real Life Encounters, by Ralph Mroz and Winning a High Speed Close Distance Gunfight, by Lou Chiodo. The former discusses myths regarding training theory and mistakes made when training to use your gun for real! The latter is by the man who revolutionized the CHP's shooting program and took their officers from a 15% hit ratio in the field to over 90%. Both of these books changed my perspective on a lot of topics, and I have been trained by world class shooters both in my profession as well as at private schools! Get them and enjoy them! Vanguard.

Joe Chiodo graduated from Andrew Hill High School in 1975

Joe Chiodo graduated from Andrew Hill High School in 1975. He traveled to various places such as New York and Los Angeles, where he worked for a diverse client base, doing book covers, and other work for toy companies, games, and comics, eventually settling in San Diego. Chiodo has been recognized as an award-winning pin-up artist and illustrator. He combines cartoony techniques with those of classic pin-up artists, often working on a range of body types and pulp themes. He illustrated the children's alphabet board book The Adventures of WonderBaby, and wrote a book, How To Draw And Paint Pin-Ups.

A firearms training program geared for the high-speed, close-distance conditions of a real gunfight needs to be about fighting, not just shooting. Former U.S. Marine and California Highway Patrol veteran Lou Chiodo recognizes this fact, and Winning a High-Speed, Close-Distance Gunfight outlines the fundamentals of his reality-based program – one that enjoys one of the highest police officer survival ratings in the country.During his police service, Chiodo realized that standard firearm qualification courses do not prepare officers to face the high-stress environment that they experience in real gunfights – multiple-round, rapid-fire engagements at danger-close distances, often in low light. He studied survival stress and confrontation dynamics from all angles and used his findings to develop the training methods outlined in this book. Through innovative ranges and drills that replicate the conditions of actual street engagements, along with a radical but surprisingly simple retooling of firearm qualification courses, Chiodo shows how you can achieve true combat accuracy when the bullets are flying for real.Whether you are a police officer, firearms instructor or armed citizen, Winning a High-Speed, Close-Distance Gunfight will help you evaluate your present program and adopt useful training methods to prepare for real-life armed confrontations. Read this valuable book and start training to fight, not just to shoot.

The author's credentials are impeccable. His theories are more than sound. His book is well written and well organized. But this follows a disturbing trend in shooting books that are written in order to sell an author's shooting course. Other than general theory there is nothing here. There is no weapons selection. No specific techniques. No course of instruction. None of the author's California Highway Patrol shooting course. No range drills. So any potential reader should beware. You're not going to get what you want for your money with this one. By all means take this author's course, because he is the real deal. But don't bother buying his book.

In full disclosure I'm one of the people mentioned in Winning a High-Speed, Close-Distance Gunfight by Lou Chiodo. I've been honored to mentor under Lou since the early 2000's. So I am biased. I'm writing this review to answer the concern mentioned in the previous review:

"But this follows a disturbing trend in shooting books that are written in order to sell an author's shooting course. Other than general theory there is nothing here."

The reason why Lou does not produce how-to material is because his experiences in law-enforcement have taught him to be very careful about putting information into the public that criminals can use to victimize innocent people. To train with Lou you have to be in the military, law enforcement or have a concealed pistol license (or some other means to verify that you are not a criminal).

I realize there are valid counter perspectives to the position Lou holds, but his motivations are pure and genuine. His perspective on this issue has lost him a lot of money because it severely limits his audience. But he's told me bluntly that he cannot in good conscious endanger innocent people by empowering criminals. The goal of his book is to arm people with the knowledge they need to evaluate the things they are taught, and the things they choose to practice, without empowering criminals with how to information. And in that regard I think his book is very unique and one of the most valuable resources out there on combat training methods. There are a lot of How To books. How many books help you to understand the Whys behind the Hows.

But again, I am biased.
