Richard's Cycling for Fitness book.

Richard's Cycling for Fitness book. Details (if other): Cancel. Thanks for telling us about the problem. Richard's Cycling for Fitness. by. Richard Ballantine.

Richard Ballantine (Author). Books on everything from custom frames to offroad riding technique. But by far the most enjoyable to read has been this and several others by M. allantine. Many of the newer cycling books have a compulsive, competitive tone to them, as if the authors assumed the reader was bent on entering the Tour de France. In contrast, Dick Ballantine infuses the reader with his sense of joy and enthusiasm about the pure act of riding and the pure form of the diamond frame bicycle, a design that has accomodated over a hundred years worth of cyclists.

Cyclists' champion who made the case for assertive urban cycling before it became fashionable. Richard Ballantine, who has died aged 72, was one of cycling's most influential and eloquent advocates, inspiring generations of cyclists. He was instrumental in promoting cyclists' rights and popularising mountain bikes and recumbent bicycles.

Richard Ballantine (25 July 1940 – 29 May 2013) was a cycling writer, journalist and cycling advocate. Born in America, the son of Ian and Betty Ballantine of Ballantine Books, and educated at the Browning School in New York and Columbia University, he principally resided in London, England.

Major section on recumbents and HPVs. A little dated, but very highquality pictures. Years ago, one of their machines completed a 1,000-mile tour down the length of England without a single mechanical problem. If you are interested in a high-wheeler or a Star, I recommend obtaining a book such as Collecting and Restoring Antique Bicycles, by G. Donald Adams (Tab Books), with directions for riding. It is just as easy to 'come a cropper' with a modern high-wheel bike as with a veteran model.

Not much has changed in cycling since 1987; sure, the equipment has changed, but not cycling itself. The bikes don't ride themselves.
I was an avid cyclist 10 years ago, but hadn't been back on my bike in years and years. I decided to get fit and picked up this book at a used dealer.
Results:
Five pounds / month weight loss, consistently, across the past four months. I can ride century rides, am more confident on busy streets, and have improved my riding position to prevent knee damage.
Look, the only way to get fit is to exercise. Think about how much a gym membership costs. Think about how much a Nautilus machine costs. Now consider the cost of this book ($4 for me) and a decent bike ($100 used, $350 new).
You're not buying a book, you're buying a life change.

while the book is getting on in years the info is, for the most part, still quite valid and useful. the illistrations are charming, the text incouraging. can't beat the used price.

Let's assume you can ride a bike, but your knowledge stops there. If you are in this situation and are comtempleting riding a bike in order to increase your fitness level, then this is the book for you. This book is a comprehensive look at basic and intermediate level bike riding. Equipment, safety, nutrition and a comprehensive set of training schedules are included in this book. The message in the text is reinforced by the use of humerous illustrations. The only complaint I had about the book it that the beginning rides are 10 miles long, which felt like they were going to kill me! But!, as the author promised, those days rapidly fell behind me and I have quickly increased my fitness level, lost some weight and had fun, all because of this book. Buy it if you are thinking about riding a bike for you health!!

I first read this book about 16 years ago. It helped me pick out a good bike and proper gear. This book includes info on exercise physiology that will help you understand how your body responds to aerobic and anaerobic exercise as well as how to pick the right type and size bike for your needs and how to set it up so that get the most out of your riding. It helped make a new man out of me.

This book is both entertaining and informative. I am nicking it one star only because of its age. It is a comprehensive classic and I am re-buying, largely for one of the most hilarious cycling cartoons I have seen anywhere and cannot find said cartoon online.
The Rollers of Vildar
The book did not entertain or inform. I'm sorry I spent my money on it
