Fly Tyer's Guide to Tying Essential Bass and Panfish Flies. The Best Bass Flies: How to Tie and Fish Them. Simple Flies: 52 Easy-to-Tie Patterns that Catch Fish. Leiser, a highly respected author and flytier, provides over 1000 patterns for the construction of artificial flies in this amply illustrated book, which will become the standard in the field. In addition to ingredients, Leiser provides frequent notes on alternate materials and techniques, and/or the history of the pattern. Libraries with minimal demand can stand pat if they hold Terry Hellekson's Popular Fly Patterns (LJ 3/15/77).

Vince Wilcox's Naturally Artificial Signature Flies  will enable tiers of all levels—from absolute beginners to long time tying experts—to follow along with ease. Vince Wilcox's Naturally Artificial Signature Flies has detailed, color images of all the steps. Some of the flies will feature over fifty photos in order to clearly illustrate for the beginner how to complete the fly patterns. The expert tier will find a plethora of useful tips and techniques throughout.  Featured flies will cover all fishing situations from nymphs, dry flies, and terrestrials, and discuss the thought processes behind creating them, the materials applied, and the inherent properties they possess. Also find a brief section on how and when to fish each pattern, a useful feature most tying books omit.

Great book

one of the best tying books I have read. Great illustration and instruction along with how and when to fish the flies. Patterns are revolutionary and really set off a new wave of tying techniques. You will see a lot of patterns now that copy many in this book.

I've got to disagree wholeheartedly with the first review of this book. There's really not much here. The designs and techniques are repetitive, as are the materials, and some of the patterns seem designed solely to use as many materials as possible. In some instances, I'd guess that the extra steps and materials actually produce a fly that is less, rather than more, effective than a simpler pattern would be. There's no reason at all to spend more time on a fly than is absolutely necessary, unless you're tying full-dress Atlantic salmon flies or super-realistic flies that are meant for display rather than for fishing. Despite the inflated claims for their effectiveness, these flies are designed from the tier's point of view rather than from the trout's. There's only one opinion that matters, and it's not that of the person at the vise.

This book's subtitle says it all. If these flies are in fact "best-selling," that speaks only to their fly-shop "bin appeal." And any tier who would claim that his flies are the "most effective" ones is in serious need of a dose of humility and a bit more contact with reality.

If you're a beginner, you'll find this book frustrating; if you're an expert, you'll find it wasteful of your time and materials. Perhaps there's someone out there in the middle who'll find it helpful, but I'm having a tough time figuring out who that person might be.

I have been following Vince's work for many years in Fly Tyer Magazine and really enjoy tying his patterns. Some are not traditional, so if you are stuck in a rut of Blue Winged Olives and Woolly Buggers I guess you may not like to tie / use some of these. If you are a creative person and can think out of the box you will love this book and these patterns. I fish some rivers where the fish are very selective due to so many fly fishermen, so your patterns generally really need to match the hatch for you to have any success. Years ago I became surprised on how well Vince's patterns work even in those situations. Many of my friends have found the same success as I have turned them on to the patterns. I never go out without some of these in my box and they will get sucessfuly used. I find his illustrations and direction exceptional. Honestly I can't tell you how many hundreds of books I have owned or read over the years, I only have 10-15 that I will never get rid of and always reference at my bench. This book will remain in that selection.

Awesome book. Tied the flies and caught fish on my first trip.
Good color and easy to follow directions. Gave me some new
ideas, and flies to tie, and of course catch fish.

Let me first say, the flies contained in this book are unique and quite effective. I had purchased many of Vince's flies before and decided I wanted to try to start tying them. The book is laid out fantastically and explains a bit of history for each fly as well which I found to be very interesting. The materials are a nice mix of natural and synthetic (as the title suggests). Idylwilde signature tiers are held to a very high standard and this author is no exception. Everything is accessible and fun here so buy this book and start giving them a try!
I expected this to be a good book from one of the Idylwilde tiers, what I didn't expect is how great it was! I wish the cover was a hard back but the spiral binding lets you lay it flat to work on tying the bugs. Great pics, great stories and info!
