This volume, that Jack Pardee terms a dissertation on six-man football, is not only the definitive rule book for the sport, but includes a thorough sixty-five-year history of Texas six-man competition, the teams that have played, and the coaches who have developed and led them. Because of the continual sprinting, dodging, and aggressive contact demanded in every one of the forty minutes of play, six-man games are won on conditioning. For this reason, the book includes a chapter titled Getting the Team Ready Physically. Strategies for offense and defense are detailed, including the O'Brien Wing Set and the O'Brien Veer, with input, also, for specialty teams. The playbook of over 250 offensive plays from various Texas six-man offensive formations will prove useful to those who compete in the game of six-man football.

My husband and I moved to a small Texas town in 1998. We have three sons and one daughter. We moved to this Lake side community from Sweetwater Texas where Friday night football was more important than being in church on Sunday morning. The first time we went to one of the schools football games was when my kids were just entering kindergarten and neither my husband nor I had seen a six man football game and we were quite stunned at what we saw. Now my sons are 17, 16 and thirteen and we are huge fans of sixman football. To watch 11 man just is not the same. These kids go out on a slightly smaller field and play offense then turn around and play defense. Many kids player every minute of the game. My daughter is and has been a varsity cheerleader for three years now.
Last year our team played for the state championship game at AT&T stadium in Arlington. We lost, but until that last game we were undefeated, My youngest started playing in the eight grade last year and at the last game of the season he tore his ACL. He is recovering right now from that surgery. My husband decided two years ago after years of coaching pee wee league football and basketball that he wanted to become a coach and a math teacher. He has two years left and there is no way that he will coach at an 11 man school. The coaches get to know their kids in an atmosphere unlike larger schools. Not only are you the football coach, but you are the basketball coach, baseball, track, and cross country and f your lucky there might be a golf and/or tennis program.

Two weeks ago my husband ordered this book at the referral of a friend. The book arrived the day before my sons ACL reconstruction surgery and he read the book while we were in the waiting room at Cook Children s Medical Center for several hours. Yes we live in Texas, and we are big west Texas High School football fan, but this book was full of towns and people that we know from our 14 years of living in this small town. Even in this giant state there is a small club of six man football that is an amazing thing to witness over and over. You can not just watch a game or two.....you have to invest a season or so, but it is worth it. To see a team that might only have eleven boys all together lay a game that takes other triple the amount of people to accomplish what those 11 can do in minutes is amazing.

As a sports official with teams contemplating going to six man it was a welcome addition to the library of sports rule books.

Great book... gives both the history and lots of coaching techniques and strategies

This book by C H Underwood covered the game, A-Z. It would be very useful to a coach or those still playing the game. What it lacks is the influence and thrills it gave to those playing the game. I will be sharing these chapters in my forthcoming book called I Played Too. This will tell the stories of oldtime players who still love the game.

Coach Underwood has produced the definitive text on six-man football, an absolute necessity for prospective coaches. Even if you have years of experience coaching traditional 11-man football, you need this book.

Under Coach Underwood's careful editorship, "Six-Man Football" covers every base that a fledgling coach needs to master this version. Coach Underwood writes about his own legendary O'Brien Veer offense, then provides seven other offensive systems to choose from in articles written by other legends of Texas six-man football coaching.

This is followed by three chapters on defensive systems, and a chapter each on special teams play and on program building, preparation and conditioning. All in all, this is an entire library on six-man football condensed into one volume. Do not try to coach this unique form of America's game without buying this book!

Highest recommendation.

Written by a former high school football quarterback and subsequent football coach of six Texas high schools, Six- Man Football is a solid guide to a variation of football especially popular in rural Texas. Chapters discuss the history of six-man football, offensive strategies as contributed by a variety of different coaches, defensive strategies, how to get one's team physically ready, and six-man football in locations beyond Texas boarders including Colorado, Saskatchewan, New Mexico, Montana, and Nebraska. Black-and-white photographs and diagrams that illustrate football plays add a clear visual touch to this practical, down-to-earth strategy and instruction manual, highly recommended for school and private athletic programs that adopt this disciplined and focused version of a traditional American sport.

This book is extremly helpful and provided me with valuable information. As a first time 6 man coach, this book is invaluable.
I bought this to brush up on six man. I had coached it before, got back into it and thought I could brush up. This is pretty dry reading...even for a football fan and coach.
