This reader serves as both an excellent companion to other texts in the sociology of marriage and the family, and as a useful source of information on its own. Cherlin has written this book as a perfect supplement to his Public and Private Families text; its 16 chapters, which address contemporary issues such as the history of the family, welfare and welfare reform, divorce and stepparenting, and teen pregnancy, complement the 16 chapters in Cherlin's other text. The author introduces each chapter, providing helpful lead-ins to the readings that follow. Using a well-balanced mix of highly accessible selections from the popular press as well as articles from several scholarly journals, this text contains 29 readings which address both public and private perspectives on the family.

The service from Amazon was fairly good, however the book arrived after classes started for my college, which put me behind and I was really disappointed when I got to Chapter 10 and the entire chapter was missing. It was really difficult to study on-line but thank goodness for the temporary link to Coursesmart which allowed me to read and print it on-line. I am going to try to get at least a partial refund after the class is over.

When I had both the textbook and the reader the textbook was more detailed oriented and therefore helped me more in class but the reader put everything in context by using personal stories or studies. Reader was helpful but textbook was more helpful for how our professor tested us.

Really, really bad textbook used in a Marriage and Family course I took last semester. Easily one of the worst texts I've ever read. My entire class was in agreement.

The condition of the book was not that great. I did not expect it to be in perfect condition, but I did not expect it to be as shabby as it was. But it is readable and it was cheap.

This is exactly the book I needed. The book came in the timeframe as stated and was in the stated condition.
Love the articles. Really diverse and topical for today's culture. One of the best books I've had to buy for college
