It also explores a cycle of behavior and uses case studies to show clinicians how to personalize the cycle with clients and form a template for treatment. In its final sections the book focuses on counter-transferential responses and the different ways in which therapists can work with self-destructive behaviors and avoid vicarious traumatization by adopting tools and strategies for self-care.

Treating Self-Destrucutve Behaviors in Trauma Survivors: A Clinician's Guide by Lisa Ferentz, is an invaluable resource for clinicians who work with trauma survivors and the complex, sometimes scary issues they bring into treatment. Lisa is a gifted clinician, educator and author and this book is her gift to trauma survivors and the clinicians who support them in their journey of healing and recovery. Lisa expertly integrates attachment theory and the neurobiological impact of trauma with effective therapeutic approaches. Therapists can use these cognitive and somatic interventions immediately with clients to support them in managing their distress and breaking their cycle of self-destructive behavior. I have used many of the techniques and strategies outlined in the book with my clients and they resonate profoundly and powerfully with my clients and provide them with empowering and healing alternatives to their previous cycle of self-destructive behaviors and the shame and self-loathing that accompanies those behaviors. Lisa compassionately and empathically encourages and supports clinicians in caring for themselves and provides concrete strategies for self-care. This book is an absolute "must-read" for clinicians. I have given copies to clinicians for whom I provide supervision or clinical consultation. My sincere gratitude to Lisa for sharing the gifts of her wisdom and compassion with clinicians through this book and supporting the healing of so many survivors.

Treating Self-Destrucutve Behaviors in Trauma Survivors: A Clinician's Guide by Lisa Ferentz was a must read for me, as I feel honored to have Lisa as one of my teachers and mentors in the field of treating trauma survivors. As I waited patiently for her book to be completed, I couldn't wait to read it... and it surpassed my expectations! This book is a wonderful resource for all therapists; most especially those that treat trauma survivors or want to learn how to work with them in the future. Lisa's knowledge, care and compassion come through in this book, as she teaches us the benefits of de-pathologizing self destructive behaviors in our clients and seeing those behaviors as part of the client's trauma narrative and working through it. I can not say enough wonderful things about Lisa and this book! I have purchased several copies of it to give to other therapists I know. This book is a gift to therapists and should be required reading for all therapists!
