Social Welfare does more than describe the major social welfare policies and programs; it also tackles the conflict and controversies involved in the processes and outcomes of policy making. It contrasts rational and political approaches to policy making, policy analysis, policy implementation, and policy evaluation. The authors present conflicting perspectives, encouraging students to think critically, to debate, and to consider their own views on issues. Other readers will always be interested in your opinion of the books you've read.

The author also focuses on policies that affect issues as racism, sexism, gay rights, and immigration.

This book is a "runaway best-seller" in this market. It introduces the reader to the major social welfare policies and programs in the U.S., including histories, trends, current problems and prospects. It focuses on policy issues and objectively describes the background and nature of the conflicts and controversies that exist, without taking a prescriptive attitude as to the "right" way to handle social problems.

I read this book for my social welfare class as required for my social work major. It was very informative and well written.
The perspective it was written from was unbiased and the information in the book was both relevant and pertinent to what my class was studying.

A very insightful book!

The book arrived right on time and in excellent condition. I ordered two other textbooks in the order and I have to admit this one is not quite as interesting as the others. But it was still a good buy and I can easily recommend it if it's an option. On the other hand if it's required it's still a good read as far as textbooks go. Much better than some I've struggled with over the last eight years.

Bought this for class. Found it VERY informative and decided to keep it for my collection as I refer to it often.

It is a textbook and I technically ordered the wrong edition. The book is a good book if you would like to understand what was going on in the social world a few years back. As with all political textbooks they change regularly. I ended up buying a newer edition.
This book is actually one of the better textbooks I've been asked to spend some time with--and there have been quite a few. The chapters are long--30+ pages, and its the typical dry stuff...but its current which helps keep it interesting.
