This book was a throwback to 7th grade.

This book was a throwback to 7th grade. Pictures decorate almost every page, the layout spoon feeds you EVERYTHING and to top it off, this book and 'Social Problems' are basically carbon copies. Not impressed with how Macionis 'wrote' two different books with basically the same info. Yes, it was easy to read and follow, but in terms of worth, the information did not go below the surface often and leaves the reader utilizing other sources.

John Macionis' publications are wide-ranging, focusing on community life in the United States, interpersonal intimacy in families, effective teaching, humor, new information technology, and the importance of global education.

This was the required text for a Sociology 1101 class. The content was both informative and engaging. The chapters are laid out in a foundational order; each page contains sidebars with highlighted terms and core concepts. The index is thorough, making it easy to find in the book whatever it is you might need.

You'll only get from a textbook what you're willing to put in, with regard to critical thinking and study skills, of course, and this book proved truly invaluable. I kept my copy after term, rather than selling it, and I still reference it regularly when writing papers or researching world topics.

I purchased this book, along with Macionis's 'Social Problems, Census Update (4th Edition)' for two different Soc classes. This book was a throwback to 7th grade. Pictures decorate almost every page, the layout spoon feeds you EVERYTHING and to top it off, this book and 'Social Problems' are basically carbon copies. Not impressed with how Macionis 'wrote' two different books with basically the same info. Yes, it was easy to read and follow, but in terms of worth, the information did not go below the surface often and leaves the reader utilizing other sources to fully understand a Soc concept and its many facets.

I passed my Sociology class because of this book! That tells you that this book is very easy to read, and the book is in pretty good shape. It's used, but it is for a great rent price. I really liked this textbook because it is durable, and there were no writings that covered up any of the texts which allowed me to read the textbook perfectly.

It's a great book. The thing is, I didn't open it once for this course. Much of the information covered in the beginning Sociology course is common sense or googlable. So, before you buy this, make sure that your teacher absolutely requires it. Otherwise you are wasting your money that could otherwise go toward your tuition.

Sadly, this edition didn't have some of theories/effects/subjects that I was required to learn for my class. It may help some, but it did not help me. I was really surprised by the lack of basic terms and ideas.

Sociology is a pseudoscience if you ask me but the book was in good shape and it is what I needed for class. BTW I still got an A even though I think the field of study is baloney.
Paperback is always weak, this one seemed to bend a little easier than previous paperbacks I've purchased, but good book with good material.
