I thought that this was one of the most interesting biographies I've read. Not only does it explain in detail the remarkable scientific progress and discoveries made by Dr. Blackburn, but also her personal and professional evolution. Dr. Blackburn had a free ranging childhood in Tazmania - with unfettered freedom to explore nature and experiment - rare for little girls any where in the world, and particularly fascinating on an island with unique species, topography, and nature.

Elizabeth Blackburn: I think I was very lucky, because I knew I was interested in living things from - very, very young. I grew up in Australia and I would - my mother tells me this, you know, I have no direct recollection - but I remember I would pick up little poisonous ants and poisonous jellyfish. I thought I would love to take a class like that, and my schedule wouldn’t allow it, but in going around to all the professors and trying to find out if I could make a schedule where I could take these classes, I was met with such surprise.

My heart is a garden where thought flowers grow, the thoughts that we think are the seeds that we sow, each kind loving thought bears a kind loving deed, while a thought that is selfish is just like a weed, we must watch what we say the live long day and pull up the weed thoughts and throw them away, and plant loving.

You won your Nobel prize for medicine for your discoveries concerning telomeres, found at the ends of chromosomes. If you think of your chromosomes – which carry your genetic material – as shoelaces, telomeres are the little protective tips at the end. They are made of repeating short sequences of DNA sheathed in special proteins. One of the criticisms of the book is that it is a bit glib. That ageing is too complicated to simply boil down to these entities at the end of chromosomes.
