Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Antarctic Research Series, Volume 62.The discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole and the associated increase in the transmission of ultraviolet-B radiation (280-320 nm) has resulted in an explosion of research activity, in both the physical and the biological sciences. This volume consolidates the wide range of research conducted in Antarctica since the late 1980s in the fields of ultraviolet radiation climatology and biological effects, and provides an overview of research efforts by scientists from a number of Antarctic research programs. The information presented should benefit new and established researchers as well as those outside the field who are interested in learning more about this area. We hope that readers will obtain an understanding of the research that has been conducted to date and an appreciation for the amount of research still needed in order to evaluate the potential climatological and biological impacts of enhanced ultraviolet radiation resulting from stratospheric ozone depletion.
