I love this book because its by Luna Leopold. Water: A Primer is an introduction to the significant works of Luna Leopold, who is the foremost morphology engineer in the country and possibly the world. Sometime I would like to read it again. Luna Leopold (yes, that's Aldo's brother!) created the watershed assessment methods I was trained to use while I worked for the New York City Dept. of Environmental Protection. I was part of the Watershed Conservation Corps for the Shokan Watershed, which is the supply of water for the city of New York. It tells about the effect of water on the earths' systems.

Leopold is widely known in his primary field for his multitude of work in fluvial geomorphology and for the classic book, Fluvial Processes in Geomorphology, that he wrote with Gordon Wolman and John Miller.

We'e(tm)ve straightened and dredged them, revetted and rerouted them, made massive efforts to control them, yet our actions have been less than successful. Too often, physical changes made to a river conflict with natural processes, resulting in damage rather than alleviating it.

This text is an expansion of a manuscript that I wrote some years ago, with the assistance of Walter B. Langbein, for the United States Geological Survey. It was entitled, A Primer on Water. That brief pamphlet, although it was widely read, did not deal with some of the topics that presently are important in teaching the elements of hydrology to students who are interested in a variety of environmental problems. Most books on hydrology are directed principally to professionals -the engineers, meteorologists, foresters, and soil scientists who design or evaluate projects or carry on research. Since in recent years there has been an increased interest in environmental problems, most of which are in some way related to water, there appears to be a need for a text that contains simple but technically sound information written in terms that are understandable to the nonspecialist. An increasing number of courses are being given at colleges and universities under the general heading of environmental science. Such courses must, of necessity, deal with water in some detail; yet few texts are avail- able to cover this aspect of the subject. My own course for undergraduates is typical. This short book is designed to cover the general principles of hydrology and the facts concerning water use that must precede any consideration of the impact on the environment of man's of the water resources The environmental effects of resource use can hardly be understood without some background knowledge of the occurrence and movement of water. A detailed explanation of the principles that I have attempted to summarize here can be found mainly in the Professional Papers and Water Supply Papers of the United States Geological Survey. To any interested reader who wishes to study in greater depth the subject of hydrology I recommend the publications of this organization. Luna B. Leopold

This is an old book, but frankly, in today's environment, should be read by every English-comprehending person on planet earth. Luna was a second (possibly third?) generation environmentalist as well as a genuine scientist. This little tome covers a very serious subject in thoroughly approachable language. I cited it in the preparation of my own master's thesis back in 1975 (Water as an Environmental Constraint in Land Use Planning), along with the somewhat more obscure and zen-like "The Hydrologic Cycle and the Wisdom of God", by, if I recall correctly Y-fu Tuan. Also, it's (Water: A Primer) is infinitely more readable than one of Leopold's other books "Fluvial Processes in Geomorphology", which IIRC, was required reading for all of Ian McHarg's Landscape Architecture students at the University of Pennsylvania. In short, this is one of the best books on water and the hydrologic cycle that any layman can understand. Perhaps even our president-elect, assuming he could exercise some Twitter restraint for say an hour or so each day.

In addition, Dr. Leopold was a very nice man...I had the privilege of meeting him late in life while he was a professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. This book is another fine bit of intelligent prose from the Leopold clan.

This book was purchased for work and it seems to be pretty helpful. My co-workers have used this as a reference and guide to assist them with there projects. This has been a big help.
CONVERSE
This is an exceptional book from one of the legends in the field of water science.

I have read "Environmental Geomorpholgy" a compilation of various authors some of whom have written so abstrusely that they are sometimes self contradictory and/or some paragraphs are not coherent. This book is written, perhaps on a grade school level, but the concepts are clear and supported by examples. She keeps the text in a form that even a person with little knowledge of science can become well informed on the subject. She assumes nothing and writes with the reader in mind and not to impress her colleagues.
