This book is extremely hard to follow for the introductory student. The way it is organized creates confusion as it frequently references information in subsequent chapters. I ended up also purchasing the e-text from Pearson directly. It was far more cost effective and provided access to the site for videos, which give a MUCH better insight into things than the written detail. The author is extremely well reputed in the field, but the writing is hard to follow and seems as though it could be simplified for the burgeoning student. Some redundancy is appreciated in textbooks to reinforce learning, however in this book, the authors syntax and general style create more confusion.
I find myself frequently looking up details elsewhere, and better understand the concepts when they found outside of this text.

I was required to buy this text for a class, but I hardly used it. The text is not written well - it's hard to follow and extremely boring. The only times I've found the text useful is for looking up a couple of definitions in the glossary. Other than that, all of the information I've needed for my class has come directly from the lectures. My computer does not have speakers so I haven't even opened the cd, but again, I haven't needed that information either. This text may be more interesting to someone in the field of audiology; I am in the field of speech language pathology and just can't get interested in the audiology classes at all. I would say if you're taking a class online see if you can get by with just the lectures and don't waste your money on this text (I'm taking SST 456 through Northern Arizona University online).

Needed to get this text for a course I am taking. As far as textbooks go, it's a good read. Interesting. Concepts are explained in language that is fairly easy to understand.

The digital version is full color, and this textbook is black and white, the cheaper type paper. For the price I expected it to be at least color, which does help with studying and remembering.

Exactly what the professor required for class.

Teacher wanted us to get this edition, not the latest one. Ok, it's much less expensive - but information doesn't always dovetail with the textbook nor her lectures. The cd is so out of date my computer wouldn't read it. This was a supplement for the class.
