I purchased this book for a IPNRC-FCN class Fall 2011. It has been very helpful and will continue to be so in the future. I especially appreciate the list of website resources at the end of the chapters even though some were not currently active. Faith Community Nursing I look forward to a an edited version that includes the current Healthy People 2020 initiatives.

touches on a lot of subjects, but author depends on a lot of other authors and uses way too many inserts from other places.

Published in 2006, this Faith Community Nursing textbook is quite comprehensive. However, as i study it now in late 2011, i believe some of the websites and references may be out of date, as this looks forward to the government initiative of Healthy People 2010. However, that does not diminish the fact that the basic information is quite helpful.

Included: (slightly edited for space)

Unit I: Faith Community Nursing (FCN) Practice includes 3 chapters: Philosophical and Theoretical Foundations; FCN Models, Preparation, and Roles; and Holistic health and the Faith Community
Unit II: Faith, Health, and the Community (4 chapters): Working in a Faith Community; Assessment of the Faith and Geopolitical Community; Diverse Faith Traditions; Community Connections
Unit III: Issues in FCN Practice (4): Legal Aspects; Ethical Issues; Complementary and Alternative Modalities; Self-Care and the FCN
Unit IV: Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (3): Planning Health Promotion / Disease Prevention Programs; Health Education; Proposal Writing
Unit V: FCN Practice Concepts (3): Clients with Chronic Illness; Palliative Care, Grief, and Loss; Vulnerable Populations

Each chapter ends with a Chapter Summary, Reflect and Discuss Questions, and a Case Study to discuss, plus an extensive listing of websites and references. There is an 8-page index at the end of the book.

The author (who i do not know at all) has clearly done her homework on reading research in every area covered in this book: she effectively summarizes the latest (at the time of the writing) research and applies it to FCN. A number of the chapters are written by nursing experts, none of whom has any less than an MS or MSN degree in her respective field. Visually, she has wisely used Boxes and Tables to summarize main points and research, define terms, list actions, etc. Finally, she uses white space and bolded headings well, so that the chapters are easy on the eyes, and there is room to make notes.

Suggestions for improvement:
1 In the chapter on Palliative care, Ms. Hickman refers to the Case Study, which is at the end of the chapter. It might be more attention-focusing to include the Case Study at the beginning of each chapter. I also wish she would have strongly emphasized the extreme constipation that comes with opioid use, and indicated the need to address this almost-universal problem in an aggressive, pro-active manner. Thank you, Dr. D. R. for teaching me this!)

2 The author of Chapter 4, Susan Metzger, often uses an awkward sentence wording to avoid sounding repetitive: "Essential is that the FCN recognize the work of the volunteers...." p. 85. This should have been edited out! reminds me of Yoda.)

3 There are very few proofreading / editing errors ... but there should be none. :)

4 An index of the Boxes for easier retrieval of information would be a very helpful feature.

I consider this a very good basic text on Parish Nursing / Faith Community Nursing. If it was updated to the year 2012, and addressed each of the suggestions for improvement, I'd give it 5 stars.

KR (MSN, RN)
This is an excellent textbook and resource for teaching new Faith Community Nurses. It supports this new specialty with evidence based practices, great theory applications and puts Faith Community Nursing in perspective through interesting historical review. My only complaint is the author has not revised the book since it was first printed. Much has happened in this growing specialty and needs to be included.
