This condensed version of the classic textbook, Surgery: Scientific Principles and Practice . Lazar J. Greenfield, Michael W. Mulholland.

For surgical residents and clinical practitioners, this text balances scientific principles with clinical practice. The book begins with a section devoted to basic topics such as biology, metabolism, inflammation, wound healing and oncology. Other chapters cover organ systems and give details of their normal anatomy and physiology. The contributors place emphasis upon modern approaches to diagnosis and management along with descriptions of surgical techniques.

Arrived in new condition and no problems. I am a general surgery resident, and this book is useful for basic surgical knowledge, that is required to advance on to your more senior resident years. Not much info in the way of actual surgical technique or step by step for procedures (I would use Mastery of Surgery for that)

Ausstan

Greenfield is one of the three major general surgery reference textbooks. It is similar to Harrison's in its completeness and level of detail. It is a reference for both experienced clinicians in practice and trainees at a Resident Physician level. The style of this book is mostly text with a few images to supplement the text as needed. I highly recommend the text for people who are interested in surgery or members of a surgical residency due to it's long useful shelf-life in your professional library.

Overall, the breadth and depth of this text was very good. There is no doubt that if one seeks to understand the basic principles as well as clinical application of general surgery, this text is an excellent addition to any surgical library.

The trauma, vascular, and most GI sections are fairly well written. Though each chapter is quite lengthy, there is a lack of uniform length and clarity from chapter to chapter which makes the reading style somewhat difficult. At times, chapter authors regurgitate statistics and major findings to provide an "evidence-based text," Unfortunately, the dizzying array of numbers and references are incohesive without major conclusions being drawn by the chapter authors. It's easy to find oneself at the end of a 30 page chapter and asking, "so what were the major take -home points?" Though many chapters emphasize basic science relevance, a balance to the clinical side is at times lacking, and leaves the house officer with unsatisfied experience.

Overall, though, the information is plentiful. At times the reading is verbose - but then perhaps that's the point of this text.

Many typos found throughout the pages and overall poorly written chapters. The exception is the vascular chapters which are helpful. I would recommend Sabiston over Greenfield as a core surgical text.

I came across this book back in early 2002, and since my best friend had the Sabiston and we were on a budget, i bought this one. This is deffinetly the best and the most complete book i could have bought on general surgery. It takes you from anatomy trough physiology in each pathology you read upon. Would recomend it to anybody, either finishing medschool, or starting your residency in General Surgery.
