Founded in 1794 as a frontier city on the Black Sea, Odessa soon grew to be one of Russia's busiest seaports. Settlers of all nationalities went there to seek their fortune, among them Jews who came to form one of the largest, wealthiest, and most culturally fertile Jewish communities in Europe. This history of Jewish Odessa traces the rise of that community from its foundation in 1794 to the pogroms of 1881 that erupted after the assassination of Alexander II. Zipperstein emphasizes Jewish acculturation: changes in behavior, attitude, and ideology as reflected in schools, synagogues, newspapers, and other institutions of the period. The patterns set then affected the community's cultural development well into the second decade of the twentieth century. More a modern metropolis than any other Russian city with a significant Jewish population, Odessa offers a window into the diversity of Russian Jewish experience.

This is a remarkable book; I never would have thought that a book on such a subject could be so important, informative, and entertaining as well. It seems that the changes occurring in Odessa during the 1800's can be taken as a model of those changes and difficulties in Jewry throughout eastern Europe, as Jews transitioned from medieval times and social isolation to enlightenment and greater participation in the community at large. The research and descriptions of groups and personalities are such that the rabbis and other leaders of the community, with their concerns and infighting, are easily recognizable, in fact, replicate themselves even now. You, as the reader, wish you could have been there to see all this for yourself, and this book might be the closest you will get. "The Jews of Odessa" answers a great many questions, and dispels many social myths.

The book is full of fascinating detail, though at times it reads like a doctoral dissertation.
Wish it had gone beyond 1881.

Great book. In a small volume - lots of information and insightful analysis. One of the most interesting themes - development of Jewish political thought, and development of the Zionist idea. And a personal note. I am a Jew from Odessa myself. Reading the book brought me back to my beautiful city, and I couldn't help but recognized many familiar characters, and thought about my family origins. Thank you, Steven!
