Joseph W. Shaw, emeritus professor at the University of Toronto, has focused his work on the architecture and the general character of the Bronze Age Aegean. In particular, he and his wife, Maria, discovered, excavated, and published (starting in 1976) the southern Cretan site of Kommos―the seaport of Minoan Phaistos and Hagia Triadha.

As well as being an archaeological guide, this beautifully illustrated volume tells the story of 30 years of fieldwork and study at one of the lesser known, but most intellectually fascinating, sites in Crete. In prehistory, Kommos was a busy harbor town with trading links extending to Egypt and Sardinia. The author traces the development of the settlement, its mysterious abandonment, and then resurrection as a religious site around 1000 B.C.

Kommos is the site of an ancient port town on the southern coast of Crete. The site was occupied over thousands of years and there are many layers of building ruins and artifacts dating from the middle Minoan period through to Roman occupation. As an amateur, I appreciated getting the "blow-by-blow" descriptions of one of the site's main archeologists as well as the attempts of interpretation of some of the site's more unusual aspects and influences. I brought this book as a prelude to planned visit to the site.

I read this book after a recent trip to Crete where I peered in through the fenced off site of Kommos at the Great Minoan architecture below.

This book is wonderful for several reasons:
- It provides excellent detail of methodology as well as finds during the Kommos excavations
- Shaw is gracious and humble in acknowledging the extraordinary team of people who worked and financed the excavation, which also reveals the details and hard work that go into an excavation of this magnitude
- It fills the reader with excitement about Kommos, its finds and provides a broader context of meaning for the Minoan civilization
- Beautiful photographs
