But the script is so impressive, that's a minor quibble. The accompanying notes from Ball and director Sam Mendes are quite insightful, hinting at a different original ending and revealing Ball's odd inspiration for his idea: the tale of Joey Buttafuoco. Ball's TV background has made him an expert technical writer, and this book would serve as a great template for the fledgling screenwriter. It includes 20 black and white photos and a cast list. The text and subtext of the movie start at the opening scene: On video: Jane Burnham lays in bed, wearing a tank top.

American Beauty marks the feature film directorial debut of award-winning theater director Sam Mendes (The Blue Room, Cabaret). The film is produced by Dan Jinks (Nothing to Lose) and Bruce Cohen (The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas) from an original screenplay by Alan Ball (HBO's Six Feet Under). Stan Wlodkowski (One Hour Photo) and Alan Ball are the co-producers.

American Beauty book. A script of amazing beauty. Alan Ball captures humanity with a world-vision that is wonderfully his. The director of the movie, Sam Mendes called it a 'kaleidoscopic journey through the American suburbia'. I'm not American, and I don't know how the Full disclosure: I never had plans of reading this; I found this "book" in the library quite by accident, and thought "why the hell not?". I say "book" because it is not a book per se, but the filming script for the movie. A movie which I absolutely adored.

The shooting script is great. Everyone needs to go see this movie. A truly remarkable script for a movie that, to my mind, is one of the two or three best movies of the '90s and by far the most life-affirming. The best way to describe "American Beauty" is simply to say that it shows how life is too short to not go after what you want - but how life is also too short to not appreciate what you already have.

CLOSE on a single, dewy AMERICAN BEAUTY ROSE. Of course I did. He is a really well-known photographer? He shoots for Elle on like, a regular basis? It would have been so majorly stupid of me to turn him down. A gloved hand with CLIPPERS appears and SNIPS the flower off. CAROLYN BURNHAM tends her rose bushes in front of the Burnham house.

Alan Ball, Sam Mendes. On a typical suburban street in a typical suburban town, there is an ordinary family living the American dream. Lester Burnham's wife, Carolyn, regards him with contempt, his daughter, Jane, thinks he's a loser, and his boss is positioning him for the ax. Captivated by Jane's sultry high school friend Angela, Lester decides to make a few changes in his mere existence-changes that are less mid-life crisis than a life reclaimed. The freer he gets, the happier he gets, which is even more maddening to his wife and daughter.

The shooting script of the acclaimed DreamWorks film starring Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening, directed by Sam Mendes, winner of the 1999 Golden Globe Award for Best Picture. In the widely praised Newmarket Shooting Script(tm) series format, here is the complete shooting script of one of the best films of 1999. Also included in this volume are a fascinating essay about the screenplay and the making of the film by director Sam Mendes, an afterword by screenwriter Alan Ball recalling the genesis of the script, a twelve-page photo section, and the complete cast and crew credits.

This is a great example of a solid, really well written, tight script. Great for general purposes of entertainment but if you ARE TRYING TO WRITE YOUR OWN SCRIPT, use this as study material for how it's done.

Read the script, then watch the movie.

I wasn't expecting this screenplay to be so good. I've read screenplays before but nothing flowed like this one did for me. I started reading it, thinking I'd read a few scenes and ended up reading the whole thing at once. I loved the movie but I didn't think I would enjoy reading the script so much. You can really see what the producers saw in this script and how it NEEDED to be made. There is something special here that I'm glad we got to see so expertly executed.

Great book and shipping was really fast

I loved reading the screenplay just as much as I enjoyed watching the film. I'm interested in screenwriting myself and bought the screenplay as a guide to my own screenwriting -- what to do and what not to do, and especially how to format shots of a person videotaping as is done throughout this piece. Excellent teaching tool!

This script will be studied, debated, and praised for years to come. Alan Ball's insights into the human condition are at once both timely and timeless. Humanity is here, beautiful and terrible, brilliantly drawn.

American Beauty was a terrific movie, one of the best I've seen this year. The screenplay comes with a lot of pictures from the movie which was a big plus.

Alan Ball's screenplay of American Beauty borders on genius. The text and subtext of the movie start at the opening scene:

On video: Jane Burnham lays in bed, wearing a tank top. She's sixteen, with dark, intense eyes.

Jane: "I need a father who's a role model, not some horney geek-boy who's gonna spray his shorts whenever I bring a girlfriend home from school. (snorts) What a lame-o. Somebody really should put him out of his misery."

The root of the family dysfunction is how they see each other. When Annette Bening's character pulls into a fast food restaurant Spacey's character works at, they trade overly polite remarks, then she shouts, "Lester, just stop it." Spacey's character responds, cooly, "Uh-uh. You don't get to tell me what to do ever again." That this is at a drive through window is relevant. To the wife, Spacey's character has turned from boyfriend to husband to employee. He's someone to help throw dinner parties. To the daughter, he's a "horney geek-boy."

Movies focus on what can be seen, and subtext is difficult to get across on film. But it's the subtext that matters. When I say some lame-o comment to Starbucks girl -- "It's busy today." -- I don't really mean "it's busy today." What I mean is, "You're the most beautiful girl I've ever seen, and your beauty frightens me, and because I feel pressured by people waiting in line, and also because I'm not sure you even like talking to me, this is the best I can come up with: It's busy today." The subtext is the heart of the matter.

The subtext of American Beauty comes across in the screenplay. Much of this movie takes place looking through Ricky's camera, or from points of view of other characters. Even the audience's pov: "Jane looks at us...." People watch us everyday, and we watch others. People judge personalities, and often get them wrong. The changes the family needs, then, aren't jobs or cars or murder. Each person needs to know that those watching them actually see them, and love them, despite any preconceived notions of what a husband or father or wife should be.

Spacey's character often asks for his family to notice him, to ask how his day is going. They respond, Why should we? And that's the problem. Why should we implies being noticed and loved have to be earned. The subtext, however, is, We would, if you noticed and loved us.

Midway through, Ricky's character shows Jane a video he took of a homeless woman who froze to death.

Jane: Why would you film that?

Ricky: Because it was amazing.

Jane: What was amazing about it?

Ricky: When you see something like that, it's like God is looking right at you, just for a second. And if you're careful, you can look right back.

Jane: What did you see?

Ricky: Beauty.

This woman, who the rest of society has thrown away, had a life, a family, hopes and dreams. Ricky sees all of that at once.

And seeing is the heart of the movie. The surface movie is of a family that seems perfect, but has some hidden problems. The real movie is about how people see others, and what it is to see love.

A person has to be willing to look.
And I hurried up to Amazon to see if they had the screenplay. This movie is, beyond a doubt, one of the greatest pieces of artwork ever created. Few films manage to make you fall completely in love with every single character. It is more profound than any movie I've ever seen. It moves from shallowest to deepest in a matter of seconds, then shifts back to surface, then dives deeper, deeper, much deeper still. And, if that isn't enough, it is incessantly immensely entertaining.
This movie cuts through materialistic delusions, pretenses of authority, masks of arrogance, and illusions of separation like a lightsaber through butter. It is intensely mystical, intensely profound, intensely real, and if this film does not make you laugh and cry--if it does not touch you in the deepest core of your being--then you are lost in a dream of arrogance and pretension, frighteningly detached from reality. But, as the film's narrator (God, voiced by Kevin Spacey) assures you at the end, you will certainly come around someday. And when you do, when you finally drop the masks and let your heart be torn wide open, then the Timeless Beauty within which all phenomena come and go "like raindrops" will be revealed as your own truest Self, and the unconditioned radiance of Love will be everywhere.
Have I lost you? Is this "mushy" or "strange"? Not materialistic enough, perhaps? Well, don't worry, my friend. One day you'll wake up from this dream, too. And when you do, when you completely die into what you truly are, into the unchanging, timeless center of your being--you will never worry again, and a mysteriously unbearable Beauty will be shining everywhere, as obvious as the morning sun, and as stunning as a bullet through your skull.
