This makes it harder to look up information. Personally, I prefer a topical organisation (. verbs, nouns, adjectives). Sadly I have no good alternative to recommend due to the fact that most books have an alphabetical organisation, which I detest. Having said this, A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar is by far the best book I've found.

This is a great book to add to your collection. It has been instrumental in my studies and I highly recommend it.

This book is fantastic for the beginning/intermediate Japanese Student. It is an excellent supplement to your other studies, and will not interfere with your other courses.

The grammatical discussion and terminology are kept in plain English. This will be quite helpful for anyone that learned English in American public schools.

The book is organized into a series of "things you should know," or "things you might be wondering about" if you are a student of Japanese. A good example is a plain English explanation of when to use "-ga" or "-o."

This book has been a great help to me, and I only have had it checked out from the library for about a week. I quickly flipped to those "questions" that I had. It supplies the conceptual knowledge that helps you apply proper grammar to more than just the sentences you have memorized.

This book is worth purchasing, as it is pretty good as reference material. But, I imagine after about a year or two, you will probably not need it anymore and could re-sell it.

Vital Beast

As long as you aren't expecting anything in the way of advanced grammar, or even much intermediate grammar for that matter, then this is a very satisfying litle book.

If you have studied from one of those texts that pretty much try to ignore explanations of grammar and try to get by with comparisons along the lines of "this noise in English = this noise in Japanese" then this book could help you to uncover a lot of what you have been missing- that is to say - some understanding of how Japanese works.

The approach and organisation is very user friendly. No prior knowledge of grammatical concepts is assumed and these concepts are explained with a minimum of jargon and quickly applied to make a point about Japanese. The chapters are short (most are 1-2 pages) and focused. The chapters can be read in order or you can dip in and out as you like. One very nice thing is that at the end of each chapter there is a list of related chapters, so you can follow themes of interest around the book as you like.

One draw back for beginners is that the example sentences are likely to be a bit difficult so you might like to hold off on this untill having finished a basic course, but even then some parts might be a bit much.

People planning on teaching Japanese might also like to look at it for ideas on how to present concepts and even advanced students who have not made a specific study of Japanese grammar MIGHT find some things of value here.

I have been borrowing this book and reading it for the last couple of days, and I must say, it is the best resource I've had for Japanese particles as of late. This book successfully compares Japanese sentence structure to English, and makes it seem so easy. Other books I've read don't really touch on why the Japanese structure is like it is, but this one covers even that.

Having said that, I would recommend reading this if you are a low-intermediate/intermediate level learner of the Japanese language because there are some words that are tough for beginners if you haven't been exposed to much Kanji yet. Do a google search for "Tae Kim's Guide," and you can download a free .pdf for a good chunk of grammar. After that, I would then say it's safe to get this book.

Another flaw with the book is that, even though the quiz questions at the end of each chapter are awesome, there are usually only one or two of them. I feel that people need more (10-20 at least) quiz questions before you really start to grasp a concept. Then again, if you are reading Japanese regularly, (as you should!) then picking out these patterns should be a walk in the park.

I'm doing the AJATT method, and have been studying for around 4-5 months now. I can confidently say this book so far (I'm only a quarter of the way through!) will help you if you let it. I know it's weird to give a book a review before finishing it, but I doubt I will find a huge middle finger on the next page. Thanks for your time.

"The audience we target is people who have little or no linguistic training and who may be unfamiliar with grammatical concepts. If you have never heard of
the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs, but are genuinely interested in learning the Japanese language, this book is for you. We hope that even if you hated your English grammar in high school, you will still find the explanations in this book comprehensible. With this objective in mind, we have limited the use of grammatical terms to the minimum. This means that, whenever possible, we have opted for simple, nontechnical terms that an average English speaker knows."

I've learnt other foreign languages and I am familiar with the terminology, so clearly this grammar is not for me. Is if for you? Well, I think you will know when you read the paragraph above.
