Mark Jeffrey Olson says that 1 Corinthians 15:50 is quoted far more than any other verse from the letters of Paul in Against Heresies. He writes that the reason for this is because Irenaeus "believes that this verse is the textual key to the exegetical battle over Paul being fought by the Valentinian Gnostics and the Catholic (Universal) Christians. Olson states that according to Irenaeus, this important verse which reads "Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God" is used by the Gnostics to point out that "the handiwork of God is not saved

This study looks at Irenaeus' development of an anti-gnostic position, calling attention to the importance of his biblical interpretation, especially of Paul's letters

Irenaeus commits several chapters in Book V of Adversus Haereses to refuting the gnostic interpretation of 1 Cor. The gnostics recognize this verse as decisive proof that Paul did not believe the flesh capable of salvation. 46 Irenaeus confronts this interpretation of 15:50 with 15:53-54 as evidence that Paul did not intend what the gnostic exegetes claim. For Irenaeus, flesh in its most oblivious and ordinary sense cannot inherit the kingdom of God and, therefore, flesh must put on immortality. 1 Corinthians 15 New International Version (NIV). The Resurrection of Christ. 50 I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 15 Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed- 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
