Dubnov's intellectual biography of Sir Isaiah Berlin is a remarkable achievement. Based on impressive historical research and materials from archives in Israel, Britain, and the United States, the book offers a fresh and enlightening perspective on Berlin. By addressing the highly ambivalent relationship between Berlin's activities as a British intellectual and diplomat and his support of Zionism it evokes a meaningful shift in the study of Berlin himself, as well as of Cold War Liberalism in general. The book reflects over modern European intellectual history, Jewish history and the history of Zionism. Dubnov is a talented narrator, and his book is accessible also to wider audience, outside the narrow guild of professional historians.

Dubnov's new account of Isaiah Berlin's intellectual journey is a fine-tuned and valuable addition to the growing Berlin bookshelf, which is rife with controversy, both political and philosophical. Berlin himself would have appreciated both the book and the controversy. I find Dubnov's illumination of Berlin's liberal Zionism particularly germane both to our understanding of his legacy and to present-day concerns shared by many of his readers. This book is a job well done.
