High up on the Col de Varda, the icy glaciers provide ideal cover for ruthless criminals determined to claim their prize. A journey to the dolomites. I had seen all the rushes of the film, but it was the first time I had sat through the full cut version. The rushes had been pure routine, short slashes of film to be viewed critically for alterations and cuts. They had meant no more to me than pages torn at random from a manuscript

The room split up into excited, gesticulating groups. Mancini went off to confer with half the hoteliers in Cortina. I don’t know where Mayne went to-he just seemed to drift off on his own. Mancini went off to confer with half the hoteliers in Cortina yself having a lonely lunch at the Luna, trying to figure out what all this had to do with Engles. When I got back to Col da Varda, there were several parties of ski-ers there, for the sun was still warm. I went straight up to my room and wrote out a report of the auction for Engles. By the time I went downstairs again the ski-ers had all gone. But Valdini was there.

This is an excellent thriller, which picks up speed as it goes along. I had read many of Hammond Innes's novels in years past, but never this one. It concerns a valuable horde of Nazi gold which has been buried on a mountaintop top near Cortina D'ampezzo in Italy, at the end of World War II. and the several cutthroats who are trying to retrieve it. The cast of characters is very well drawn, interesting, and the setting, an isolated mountain ski lodge, is perfect for the plot. The violence picks up about halfway through, and is a thrill-a-minute from then on. The author does a fine job of describing the characters who are crowded into close quarters and all suspicious of one another, and the tension is palpable. I wish I could see the 1948 film, "Snowbound", which was made from this book, but it appears to be unavailable.

One of Innes' Best. Really enjoyed it. Have read all of his novels and this one is in the top ten.

This book is classic Innes. But it has also been published under the title "Fire in the Snow". So if you are like me, trying to catch up on his early books, just be aware that the same book lurks under different titles.

This book is absolutely charming! I have loved the movie "Snowbound" since I was young and I just realized that this book was the inspiration for it. Thank you! I treasure this!

Neil Blair is an unemployed ex-army officer. One day he bumps into his old Battery Commander Derek Engles who offers him several months' well paid work as a script writer. Indeed Engles is now a hard-bitten film director shooting in the Dolomites. To Blair, this seems like the chance of his lifetime and he thinks that his luck has turned at last. What he doesn't know is that the job also means getting caught in a breathtaking adventure with plenty of suspense and drama.

An old fashioned adventure story much in the vein of what Hammond Innes usually wrote.
????????????????????????
I have read several books by Hammond Innes and have always enjoyed the adventure and exotic found in his stories.
The Lonely Skier, however, stands apart.
This book, with its post-war-time story of espionage in a remote ski chalet on the Italian/German border, will not disappont the reader looking for adventure, action, or intrigue. In addition, The Lonely Skier is also packed with dry comedy, interesting characters, and is akin to watching an elegant black and white movie of the forties.
It is rare that I read a book more than once, but I have read this book so many times that it has literally fallen apart and I need to find a new copy. I might also add that I took this book along during twelve years in Africa and I always found its snowy backdrop more effective than the most powerful of air conditioners.

This is the first Innes book that I read. It introduced me to Innes's exciting story telling. Since then I have been working on reading them all. This is one of his best.
