The essays are of somewhat uneven quality, but most are very well done. I particularly found helpful that there were articles from scholars supporting various alternatives to the currently dominant Two-Source Hypothesis.

Bellinzoni, Arthur J; Tyson, Joseph B; Walker, William O (1985), The Two-source hypothesis: a critical appraisal, Our present two-gospel hypothesis developed out of this latter form of the proto-gospel hypothesis: namely Matthew and Luke have copied an extensive proto-gospel (much longer than Mark since it included such material as the sermon o. Schaff, Philip (1904), A select library of Nicene and post-Nicene fathers, Handmann makes the Gospel according to the Hebrews a second independent source of the Synoptic Gospels, alongside of the "Ur-Marcus" (a theory which, if accepted, would go far to establish its identity with the Hebrew Matthew).

The Two-Source Hypothesis Mark wrote first. Matthew and Luke independently used both Mark and a document termed Q. The Farrer-Goulder Hypothesis Mark wrote first. Matthew used Mark, while Luke used both Mark and Matthew. The Griesbach-Farmer Hypothesis Matthew wrote first. Luke used Matthew, while Mark used both Matthew and Luke.

The Two Source Hypothesis states that Matthew and Luke independently used Mark and a second source termed Q. Against the Farrer-Goulder hypothesis, it is maintained that it is improbable that the author of Luke consulted the Gospel of Matthew. The relative independence of Matthew and Luke is established by the convergence of several different arguments.

What is the "gospel truth" about the composition of the Synoptic Gospels? That the New Testament gospels are the earliest surviving attempts to "tell the story" of Jesus of Nazareth is generally agreed, but the question of how they came to be composed remains a field of turbulent debate among New Testament scholars. Professor Arthur Bellinzoni has collected for this volume 27 essays that argue the case for and against "the priority of Mark" and the existence of the hypothetical "Q." Beginning in each case with the paradigmatic proposals of Burnett Hillman Streeter, Bellinzoni has assembled the crucial literature on every side of the controversy, following the thread of discussion all the way to the recent revisionism of William Reuben Farmer, David Laird Dungan, and their allies.
