"An Encyclopedia of Naval History" by Anthony Bruce is comprehensive, if nothing else. It should be noted that this is an encyclopedia with entries in alphabetic order. There is no index and the table of contents consists only of alphabet letters. It can be a useful reference if the reader already knows where he/she wants to go. I suppose one could bounce around to pull out isolated tidbits, but it is not a cover to cover read. I don't know if the paper version provides illustrations, but that would be a plus even with the limited ability of the Kindle.

This is an expanded version of the author's 1998 encyclopedia and like the original work it fills a real need. Covering the last five centuries of naval history, it offers a wide range of clear, accurate entries. Although space limitations prevent comprehensive coverage, it is the first place to go to research modern naval history.

This e-book had any errors that should have been caught in editing. For example, several places in the book stated that the Iowa class battleships could fire a super heavy armor piercing shell weighing 27,000 pounds. That would be super heavy! Correct weight was 2,700 pounds. A simple typo that should have been caught by the editors. Also, maps would have been very helpful in seeing where some of the battles took place.

Great reference book. I won some bets with it, tonnage, caliber of guns, date sunk etc. More than paid for the book. There are a few typos but not many. Buy it.

Found it useful particularly for aspects of naval history I was not familiar with. Depth is lacking, but this is not unexpected in a volume which covers such a broad range of history. Better at covering individuals (explorers, admirals) and ships than battles and wars which require the additional detail. Could use more visuals (maps, etc.)

for naval persons- most won't appreciate

Good general info book; starter!
I appreciate the information. I may refer back to the book as a reference resource, but the alphabetical listing of the key historical naval leaders, ships, or events from the 16th century to the Vietnam war and back was disconcerting. I would be interested in more information after reading about the Salerno Landings and the following entry is William Sampson, an interesting historical figure for the US Navy; I was interested in reading more follow up to the key World War II people or ships involved with the landings. I would have preferred a chronological format vs an alphabetical format with an index of the entries at the rear of the book.
