Barney’s Version is a personal paean that delights in skewering and roasting the self-righteous advocates of postmodern moral relativism. Richler has never been in finer form. Hilarous and heart wrenching at the same time.

Barney’s Version is a personal paean that delights in skewering and roasting the self-righteous advocates of postmodern moral relativism. Delivered as a fin-de-siècle preoration, Barney’s Version is embroidered with the savage mischief and gleeful scorn of Waugh and the downward spiralling grotesquerie of Bellow’s self-destructive anti-heroes. fast paced and beautifully written.

Barney's Version is a novel written by Canadian author Mordecai Richler, published by Knopf Canada in 1997. The story is written as if it is an autobiography by Barney Panofsky recounting his life in varying detail.

Long considered one of Mordecai Richler’s most beloved and acclaimed novels, St. Urbain’s Horseman has now been adapted into a high-profile two-part CBC drama.

Ebullient and perverse, thrice married, Barney Panofsky has always clung to two cherished beliefs: life is absurd and nobody truly ever understands anybody else. Long considered one of Mordecai Richler’s most beloved and acclaimed novels, St.

In Barney's Version, the women are his finest achievement. By turns gripping, hilarious, ridiculous and even poignant.

Barney's Version book Mordecai Richler spent his career mercilessly lampooning the follies of all three groups.

Barney's Version book. Barney is raised a secular Jew in Montreal in a blue-collar family of a police detective, which represented quite a success for a meat-cutter with a 7th grade education. Asked by associates why it is Jews end up being so smart, his answer was that: .. we’ve been kicked around for two thousand years. We’re not more smarter, we’re more alert. Mordecai Richler spent his career mercilessly lampooning the follies of all three groups.

Saw the movie and thought the book might give me more insight. Mordecai Richler was an acclaimed Canadian novelist and essayist born in Montreal in 1931.

I began to read Barney’s Version on an overseas flight, just prior to its publication, some 13 years ago. No doubt the passengers next to me thought I was demented. I chuckled and belly laughed and shed a tear or two. Waves of pleasure washed over me as I wallowed in Mordecai Richler’s mordant wit, razor sharp insights and juicy dialogue. His stings and arrows, along with the occasional dagger, were perfectly aimed. My merriment was spiked with surprise when it turned out that a couple of his missives were actually directed at me.

Charged with comic energy and a steely disregard for any pieties whatsoever, Barney's Version is a major Richler novel, the most personal and feeling book of a long and distinguished career.

Ebullient and perverse, thrice married, Barney Panofsky has always clung to two cherished beliefs: life is absurd and nobody truly ever understands anybody else. But when his sworn enemy publicly states that Barney is a wife abuser, an intellectual fraud and probably a murderer, he is driven to write his own memoirs. Charged with comic energy and a wicked disregard for any pieties whatsoever, Barney's Version is a brilliant portrait of a man whom Mordecai Richler has made uniquely memorable for all time. It is also an unforgettable love story, a story about family and the riches of friendship.

Hi,
I was half way through the movie when I placed it on pause and bought the book.
After reading the book and then watching the movie again from the beginning I have to say I enjoyed the movie better.

I know that doesn't happen often and neither do my reviews.

Still worth a read.

I read it after watching the movie. Big mistake.

Interesting characters but it wasn't for me.

Funny and tragic at the same time. It takes place in the Jewish sector of Montreal. Surprising ending. I did not like certain aspects of the book, such as his criticism of the Quebec society in which the author he grew up.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book (living in the Montreal region for most of the past quarter-century helped me appreciate many of its details). Few books make my laugh, let alone out-loud repeatedly. Highly recommended.

Barney Panofsky is an aging television producer who is politically incorrect, alcoholic, caustic, and strangely likeable. When an acquaintance of his youth writes a memoir that vaguely accused Barney of being both a murderer and an intellectual infant, Barney takes it upon himself to write his own "Version".
The result is a long and winding trip through Barney's memory, but however tedious that may sound, it is actually highly entertaining. There is a tenderness at it's heart that makes it essentially a love story mixed with whiskey and bawdy humour.
Funny and sweet while being inflammatory and offensive - few authors could have pulled this off.
