29 quotes from The Coming Race: ‘We are not such fools as to pay for reading inferior books, when we can read superior books for nothing. But the effects of the alleged discovery of the means to direct the more terrible force of vril were chiefly remarkable in their influence upon social polity. As these effects became familiarly known and skillfully administered, war between the vril-discoverers ceased, for they brought the art of destruction to such perfection as to annul all superiority in numbers, discipline, or military skill.

Bulwer-Lytton also left his mark on science fiction, in his very odd novel The Coming Race (1871). The story, about the narrator’s journey deep beneath the surface of the earth, where he encounters a powerful utopian society, is one of the earliest science fiction novels. Bulwer-Lytton seems to have been ‘splitting the difference’ between the methods of flight, combining wings and an air-filled bladder for his flying device. 3. Robots: The nice conceit of multipurpose vril allowed Bulwer-Lytton to imagine lots of wondrous things.

Edward Bulwer-Lytton was a prominent English writer and politician in the 19th century. Bulwer-Lytton is notable for being one of the first authors to earn a considerable fortune from just his books. Bulwer-Lytton also was responsible for famous sayings such as "pursuit of the almighty dollar" and "the pen is mightier than the sword". Some of his most famous works include The Last Days of Pompeii, The Coming Race, and Zanoni. The Coming Race, published in 1871, is a novel that centers around a young, unnamed, wealthy traveler who visits a friend

The Coming Race is the crowning achievement of the genre of hollow earth fiction, in which a hero makes a perilous journey underground and discovers a superior race. The customs and political systems of these “aliens from inner space” are researched and contrasted with the deficient practices of old-fashioned, muddling, imperfect humanity. The subterranean race in this novel, the Vril-ya, are seemingly angelic creatures whose amazing powers come from their harnessing of a force called Vril. Bulwer’s novel is unequaled for the depth of its intellectual explorations―inquiries into an astonishing range of social, political, scientific, religious, linguistic, and sexual issues that are enabled by the hollow earth plot.

The novel is accompanied and illuminated in this edition by a broad range of historical materials on evolution, electromagnetism, gender roles, and nineteenth-century science fiction.

I was interested in reading this because I read the Nazis read this book and believed it to be more fact than fiction. I like Victorian style writing and found the book an interesting read. I would recommend the book to anyone who appreciates early classics.

This book is outstanding. The subject of the book is nothing compared to the grammar and depicting of current date political craziness. WOW! I am recommending it read and see for yourself.

Written by Bulwer-Lytton of Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Competition fame, this isn't the greatest novel I've ever read. That said, if you're searching for this item, you probably know what you're getting. The plot concerns a modern western man thrust into a utopia peopled by the Ana, who have harnessed the incredible power of vril, the ultimate combination of electromagnetism, mesmerism, and Odic force. Whatever that is. He goes through the usual discussions of how their language works, funerals, foods and all that that you might expect in this sort of work, but thankfully in less detail than usual (the whole novel is only around 100 pages). Although considered on par with a pet frog, our hero manages to woo the daughters of the two most powerful dudes in the region. Unfortunately, this means he has to be burned to a cinder. Drama ensues!

Specificly to the Cathedral Classics edition, the physical quality of the book is pretty nice, especially for the price, but the text has a lot of typos. Tolerable, but if that really bugs you, get a different edition.

Bulwer-Lytton has an undeserved reputation as a bad writer, but he is a wonderful storyteller who created a lot of the best-known phrases we still use today.

I recently became aware of the concept of Vril watching a show on the History Channel. Did some research and happened to come a across this book. Looked like a good read, but was shocked to find that there was no copy available at the Library, so I purchased it.
Way ahead of its time when written, and found it a very interesting read. Highly recommended.

I'm something of a Bulwer Lytton fan, so I looked forward to this, one of his rare works in the field of speculative fiction. Oddly, though, here Bulwer tends to disregard even the science of the early 1870s in which it was written. It's the tale of a Gilded Age American mining engineer's encounter with the super-developed subterranean culture of the Vril Ya. Despite its imagined aircraft and robotic automatons, the book is really a fantasy. It's based on the idea of a race of humans with innate supernatural powers who have created a fossilized and somewhat Buddhist-style peaceful society, but who also feel morally obliged to destroy "inferior" cultures such as ours. I think the author intended a parallel with the European colonialism of his time. There is also an interesting cultural reversal of the roles of men and women, which includes some of Bulwer's liveliest writing. But on the whole, the book is more of a prolonged philosophical anecdote than an entertainment.

Nice to know Hitler's inspiration for finding the aliens. Hint, they've been here a long time.
I love the book, Love the author. I did not read the description thoroughly. This is a current reprint. I placed the order on the 4th of may this book was printed on the 2nd of may. I was looking for an older edition. That being said this item is what I wanted as far as content. The publishing itself is quick and appears cheap.
