Dan Fante speaking at The Book Fair in Turku Finland 2007. Daniel Smart Fante (February 19, 1944 – November 23, 2015) was an American author and playwright. He was born in Los Angeles. Fante was the son of novelist John Fante whose writing came back into vogue after Charles Bukowski declared him "my God", and wrote the introduction to the reprint of Fante's seminal novel about life in Los Angeles, Ask the Dust. Chump Change, Mooch, 86'd and Spitting Off Tall Buildings comprise a tetralogy about Fante's hard living alter-ego Bruno Dante

The masterful Dan Fante, author of Spitting Off Tall Buildings, does it again. SPITTING OFF TALL BUILDINGS it seems to this reader, is more of a predecessor to CHUMP CHANGE and MOOCH than a follow up. But that doesn't matter.

The masterful Dan Fante, author of Spitting Off Tall Buildings, does it again. Easy to read, easy to relate  . Once again Dan Fante's literary skill is - dare I say it - dazzling! Few if any American writers today can go where Fante goes: To the belly of the beast.

Spitting off Tall Buildings is the last episode in the Bruno Dante trilogy. This time Dante finds himself in New York, needing work. Work is more often just a battle to survive - a struggle with his inner demons before they screw things up for him. He tries his hand at countless jobs; movie theatre usher, hotel night manager, belt sales man, taxi driver and window cleaner of tall buildings amongst others.

Bruno Dante - aspirant playwright, part-time depressive and long-time drunk - has hitchhiked cross country. Escaping the sunshine, have-a-nice-day culture of L.A. for the more cynical climate of New York.He should fit right in. But if there's money for beer he's sure to mess things up.A rut of deadbeat temping jobs follow. But Dante won't play office politics or kiss ass, so they don't last. Longer stints as the night manager of a run-down hotel, a window cleaner and, finally, a cabbie, are punctuated by whacked-out affairs, drinking binges and bouts of depression.

Comments:

Steep
This is the first novel I read from Dan Fante, and was fairly quick read. Reminded me a lot about Factotum by Charles Bukowski, only it was much shorter. Bruno has significantly more problems to deal with than Henry Chinaski ever did, but they are hilarious everyday musings of a man who can't stop drinking, who is somewhat of a jerk but you end up routing for him. Currently reading 86'd another Dan Fante classic.

I was excited to read this book since the author is the son of John Fante. Fante is usually brought up in connection with Bukowski since Hank was a fan of his. Much like his father's work, Dan Fante writes about a regular Joe. Like Bukowski, this character goes through a miriad of jobs and thinks himself a sexual dynamo. Unfortunately, this is where it feels like Augusten Burroughs has taken over. The character is bisexual and the descriptions of sexual escapades are a little too clear for my taste.

That aside, I could visual the characters and did enjoy the story in general. Good book for the beach or the pool.
Hulore
Bruno Dante's life is like a noir film without the dame or cool look of black and white. he's broken and f*%^&ked up, the reality of what's left over when you wake up from the american dream.

Fante writes a bit like Bukowski, hell, he lived a bit like Bukowski only one of those may be a bad thing.
Modigas
Entertaining read. Not my favorite of his, but good. Bukowski-esque for sure, but aren't they all. Have a beer with this one.
Renthadral
Excellent novel, his father John and Charles Bukowsky are present, nevertheless Dan Fante has a vioce of his own. Worth every penny.

Amazing book

He's the best of the "I'm in the gutter" writers .. and I've been in the gutter ... and I REALLY don't want to go where he goes ... whatever they advance him to write his books ...
Fante's novel makes The Lost Weekend an attractive alternative to incremental death by drink. A rambling diary in defense of bad behavior, the trials and tribulations of anti-hero Bruno Dante are a testament to self-destruction, the humor acerbic and cynical. A man who loves literature, indeed seeks respite from the voices in his head by reading, Dante has left LA to seek his misfortune in the harsh New York winter. A series of dead-end, low-paying jobs define the daily scramble for existence of an erudite drunk who occasionally loses control and resorts to violence to settle his scores with the world.
From high-rise window washer to NY cabbie, Bruno hasn't met a job he can't walk away from, his destination the nearest bar or a three-day bender in a shabby rented room with bathroom facilities down the hall.

Much of this character's appeal is his lack of inhibitions, apt to say exactly what is on his mind when confronted with everyday ugliness- or an obese waitress who spoils his appetite. How can you not like a guy who so defines the irreverent American spirit? Whether working on his writing, drinking his way through another soul-killing job or lost in a blackout, Bruno is at odds with an indifferent world that turns a blind eye to human suffering, self-inflicted or not. There are moments: Dante's well-deserved moniker as "Batman" among the other cabbies; a telephone encounter with a rep from "Sea-nation", a unique cremation-at-sea service that lands Dante in the psych ward for observation and a distasteful dose of the truth.

Clearly Fante's work is autobiographical. Son of a novelist, the author is conversant with quality writing and the darker side of daily existence, where the only relief is temporary oblivion. Reveling in his obstinate nature, Fante's protagonist plows through life on auto-pilot, accidentally surviving. There's a message here somewhere, but it doesn't come cheap. Luan Gaines/2009.
